NEA and NEH funding helps support jobs for millions of workers, including union creative professionals in every state, and it provides all Americans with access to programs that lift up local economies. Now Congressman Brecheen (R-OK) wants to cut funding by $48 million for each agency—that’s a 23% cut we cannot let happen!
Stand with creative professionals by telling your representative in Congress to "Vote NO" on Rep. Brecheen's NEA/NEH defunding amendments! Call 202-224-3121 now!

The SF Symphony is one of THE great orchestras. Alas, their board's grim austerity plan & willingness to lose Esa-Pekka Salonen risks ruining both morale of the players and overall artistic quality. This in one of the wealthiest demographics in the world. What gives?

Some news: After 18 years at the Boston Globe, I am moving on from my position and joining the faculty of @TuftsUniversity, where I’ll be taking up a newly created professorship in music history and public humanities, beginning this fall.
I will miss working with many wonderful Globe colleagues. I’m also very excited for a new home base where I'll be able to teach, continue with my public-facing writing, and embark on a new set of collaborations including a position next season as the first Writer-in-Residence of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
At this juncture, I am launching a free email newsletter through which I’ll be sharing new work, news of events, recommendations and more. Please sign up here:

As I wrote in a farewell column that will be published soon, the chance to listen and reflect with such an extraordinary musical community for nearly two decades has been the privilege of a lifetime.
