One of the things I appreciate about attending ICANN meetings is the opportunity to better understand the systems that keep the Internet working, especially those we rarely think about when we go online.
I’m currently attending a session at ICANN87 in Bali, Indonesia, on the Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC) and the DNS Root Server System, led by Jeff Osborn, Chair of RSSAC.
An interesting point from the presentation is how rarely the DNS Root Server System is actually consulted when we access websites.
According to the presentation, more than 90% of DNS responses can be answered using information already stored by resolvers, while only an estimated 0.02% require a query to the Root Server System.
Another useful clarification is that root server operators do not decide what goes into the Root Zone. Their responsibility is to make that information reliably available across the Internet.
For me, this conversation connects directly to the work we are doing through the Uganda DNS Forum, particularly around DNS infrastructure resilience, DNSSEC and strengthening technical capacity within Uganda’s Internet ecosystem.
As we continue building the DNS Academy and the DNS Pulse platform, these discussions are helping me think about how we can translate knowledge of global Internet infrastructure into practical improvements at home.

Critical infrastructure is making the Internet more reliable in Malawi.
New Internet exchange points (IXPs) have enabled peering, which keeps Internet traffic local. This improves speed and service quality while reducing costs.
Together with the Coalition for Digital Africa, we can build a stronger, more resilient Internet for everyone in Malawi and beyond.
