The director of the 2011 anime, Hiroshi Koujina, had never read the HxH manga or watched the 1999 anime before working on the series.
He said this actually helped him approach the adaptation with a completely fresh perspective.
Even the 2011 anime staff didn’t think they would actually reach the Chimera Ant arc.
Character designer Takahiro Yoshimatsu recalled that when the director announced they were going all the way to the end of the arc, everyone applauded, but privately, many of them thought it seemed impossible.
Meruem’s final scene in Episode 135 was one of the hardest sequences for the staff to adapt.
Director Hiroshi Koujina said the scene was especially difficult because it is driven almost entirely by dialogue, leaving the team with very little physical action to rely on visually.
Togashi has never created an official backstory for Hisoka.
After reading Sui Ishida’s Hisoka one-shot, though, Togashi said it actually made him want to draw an earlier part of Hisoka’s life that would lead directly into Ishida’s story.
