New CADeN publication: Direct cost of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) for older adults in Canada, cross-sectional analysis (2013 vs 2021)
Key Findings:
- Direct expenditures on PIMs decreased by 33.6% despite a 32% rise in the number of older adults
- Cost savings were partially due to fewer overall PIM exposures. Exposure decreased for most PIM categories but increased for gabapentinoids (+83.7%), PPIs (+6.5%) and antipsychotics (+4.5%)
- Greater availability of generics & reductions in drug costs also contributed to savings.
The cost of PIMs in Canada was last evaluated 10+ yrs ago: these findings provide med. appropriateness stakeholders with more recent data of their financial burden.

Une étude menée par la Dre Cara Tannenbaum et le Dr Justin Turner démontre l’efficacité de brochures éducatives pour réduire les doses d’opioïdes chez les utilisateurs de longue date au Manitoba.
Avec la hausse des prescription d’opioïdes à travers le Canada, des interventions telles que celle-ci représentent des solutions simples pour améliorer l’utilisation sécuritaire de ces medicaments, et la sécurité des patients.
