Strong bipartisan, well-attended, bicameral call this morning with President @ZelenskyyUa expressing our support for Ukraine against Russia’s crimes and savagery, and dismay that Trump has taken the side of the evildoer. (Again.)

Ten years ago today. In just the last few days: Trump made a deal for the U.S. to buy Russian diesel, an economic lifeline for Putin; he and Elon Musk blamed each other for an order that slowed down Starlink satellite connectivity over Ukraine, hampering the country's defenses during a devastating Russian attack; and Trump waived sanctions on Russia that Congress, led by his late friend Lindsey Graham, had pushed for. Now, Putin has proposed a summit with Trump and Xi to decide Ukraine’s fate for them, bulldoze a century of international cooperation, and frame Russia as an equal to the U.S. and China. We’ll see if Putin’s puppet continues to dance on his strings.

Imagine if in 1943 FDR had decided that the US would stop helping Britain and instead would side with the Third Reich. That's a bit like what President Trump is now doing by cozying up to Russia as it tries to destroy Ukraine. Utterly shameful. A humiliating moment for the US.

Beijing has for a while been scraping its barrel for tools to coerce Manila. Whether it's out at sea with those "control measures" or here threatening to sanction PH officials, clearly it's running out of ideas. The only tools left: outright economic sanctions and kinetic force.
China has warned that it would bar more Philippine officials from entering its territory should Manila declare Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan persona non grata, escalating a diplomatic row that has fueled tensions between the two countries amid their maritime dispute in the West Philippine Sea. Congress has a lame-duck session. The President has an agenda: supplemental, reconciliation, Ballroom, etc… I think the agenda is dead. Many of us won’t fund these things knowing he is propping up a dictator’s invasion and throwing an ally under the bus.
Tillis. Not holding back. Also saw @JohnCornyn just tweet “Lindsey would be appalled.” But key question…what can/is the senate going to do about it?

“we will pay any price….to assure the success and survival of liberty.” Is this still true? Do we prize liberty or do we prize power and purse? No more clear test than the choice between Ukraine and Russia. Abandon Ukraine and we abandon liberty. Eventually even our own.

Hope @elonmusk is ready for the bottom to drop out of the StarLink market as customers realize access depends entirely on whether Elmo likes you or not—and that potentially includes the U.S. military under an admin he doesn’t like.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine’s Starlink systems remain capped at 161 km/h (100 mph), according to Christopher Miller of the Financial Times. He said exceeding the limit “causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone,” adding that interceptor drones can’t function. Zelenskyy said Ukraine tested whether SpaceX is truly facing technical issues, as the U.S. side told Kyiv, by sending vehicles with Starlink terminals into EU territory. He said they moved at more than 180 km/h and the systems “worked perfectly.” He said Ukraine has logs and evidence, and concluded the restrictions apply inside Ukraine but not in the EU, which he called a “planned operation.”

I didn't know threatening to use force is part of an attempt to stabilize bilateral relations. It's a very innovative idea that can only come from Beijing. 🙃
Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan's remarks serve to stabilize China-Philippines relations, and his wording, hyped by some Philippine forces, actually aims to deter any actions that seek to jeopardize bilateral relations, says a Chinese expert, adding that the latest spat over the ambassador's remarks shows the Philippine side’s manipulation and an upgrade of undermining bilateral relations. @Chinaembmanila @DFAPHL @jaytaryela globaltimes.cn/page/202610/1…

Zelensky is making the right choice. The only path to peace with Putin is to cut off his ability to finance the war. That means going after Russian oil and gas.  The US should back up Ukraine by continuing full sanctions on Russia. Putin only understands strength and is disdainful of concessions. nytimes.com/2026/10/15/world…

Many Western analysts assume a failed Taiwan invasion could bring down Xi Jinping. But Kublai Khan launched two disastrous invasions of Japan -- and survived politically. The Yuan dynasty endured for nearly another century. Why? Its continental foundations of power remained intact. nationalinterest.org/blog/si…

This is our sequel to the War on the Rocks piece. Xi Jinping and the Mongol Empire.
