“Children have been born within these systems who have never experienced civil state authority.
The threat is therefore no longer confined to the men carrying rifles today but extends to… children through which these networks may reproduce themselves tomorrow.”
A HumAngle investigation by @A_Salkida has uncovered that the Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgency in Nigeria is preparing an estimated 8,000 children for its next generation of fighters. We obtained exclusive footage of children in the madrasah.

A comment from one of our readers on our story, uncovering the plight of the people of Murbai, said, “For the coverage of the most remote stories in Nigeria, HumAngle continues to deliver.”
This resonates with our mission at HumAngle, which is to uncover truth and document realities that might otherwise go unnoticed.
So, we are asking you, support a newsroom you can trust to deliver from the remote parts of Africa.

The greatest danger facing Nigeria is not only the Boko Haram fighters we confront today, but the generation being prepared to replace them tomorrow. While the government speaks of a war nearing its end, the insurgency’s capacity to reproduce itself raises a far more disturbing question about the future of our country.
The threat is immediate: continuing violence.
It is emerging: indoctrinating and recruiting another generation.
It is generational: the possibility of children growing into a conflict they inherited, rather than chose.
We cannot declare victory by counting the fighters killed while ignoring the conditions that produce their successors. A war is not ending if its next generation is already being prepared.
My investigation for @HumAngle_ examines the danger of mistaking military gains for lasting peace, and what Nigeria risks if it fails to confront the future of this insurgency today.

using the life of one boy, khalil who was a child in 2015, @A_Salkida shows us how the insurgent group perseveres.
from a child of a first-generation member, to a fighter and propagandist, today, khalil is a senior member who is also passing the baton.
you have to read this!
Why does the Boko Haram insurgency continue to persevere for so long? How many people currently fight in the army, and what strategy has ensured that the army is replenished as thousands defect and hundreds are killed?
For HumAngle, @A_Salkida investigated. Out now:

HumAngle's investigation finds that the insurgency is still capable of replacing fighters, governing populations, and preparing an estimated 8,000 children for its next generation.
How chilling is that?

this latest @HumAngle_ investigation by @A_Salkida completely changes our understanding of the scale and magnitude of the boko haram/iswap insurgency. it also says how many active fighters exist and how many children are being trained.
a must-read.

Thousands of children, who were born in terror enclaves, are being trained to sustain the Boko Haram insurgency. “Not every child receives military training. Some become clerics, mechanics, or auxiliary nurses.”

One damning fear I have about the lingering Boko Haram crisis is the tendency that it'll stay with us far longer than we want. This investigation by my boss @A_Salkida via @HumAngle_ has just solidified that fear.
If you care about Nigeria's security crisis, this is a story you must read to understand why we are where we are.

We don't talk enough about our allergy for accountability in this country. Because wtf.
Zainab said as though emerging from a trance, “You mean I won’t be seeing my daughter today?” The caseworker confirmed. “Even if I can’t take her home yet, can I at least just see her?” she asked. The answer was no.
She sat in Hassan’s office and began to cry.

A mother of two was arbitrarily detained for 12 years by the Nigerian Army. She returned to the news of her son’s death, while her surviving child, who was in state custody, has been ‘adopted’ by a politician and his wife.

The Nigerian Army is known for abusing human rights. This woman suffered simply because she's poor and not privileged.
And they wonder why things are not going well for them

This report broke me. Subhannallah. Thank you very much Hauwa and @HumAngle_ for telling an uncomfortable truth and reminding a system that is hell bent on sweeping past grave injustices under the carpet. May all Parents, Siblings, Guardians, wards, and Relatives be reunited while alive and in good health, Ameen. Verily, even if they are denied justice while alive, Divine Justice awaits us all in the hereafter.
