It’s completely incomprehensible that one of the most destructive ways of fishing is permitted in Marine Protected Areas. What exactly are these areas protected from? Please contact @SteveReedMP to urge action on this crucial issue to protect & restore our seas. @OceanaUK

Only just seen this. But @ChrisGPackham is right.
Virtually all salmon is produced in disgusting ways. The fish suffer and the water is polluted, which pollutes the sea around the pens.
Plus they sometimes escape and disastrously breed with wild salmon.

🐬 Marine experts on the Isle of Man had a bumper year of whale & dolphin sightings, describing it as the best since 2010!
And even better may be on the way. Bottlenose dolphins return to the island from October, sometimes in huge pods of up to 200

🌡️ The ocean has absorbed 90% of the world’s excess heat trapped as a result of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new report - leading to a saltier, more acidic ocean, accelerated sea level rise & record marine heatwaves 1/2🔽

Thames Water is insolvent.
Why on earth is Burnham not nationalising it?
🚨BREAKING
Andy Burnham has just announced that he will repeal Margaret Thatcher’s ideological ban on public ownership of water companies. This is good news, and a sign of just how intensely this government is feeling the pressure from the public.
But this means absolutely nothing if he does not then bring water into public ownership.
Instead, Burnham’s speech doubled down on regulation as a way to fix the crisis in our water system.
This is doomed to fail. When water companies are fined, they pass them on to us. When bonuses are banned, they call them something else.
Burnham has an open goal with Thames Water. The company is insolvent. And the only option to keep it privatised is to hand it over to US hedge funds. Yet Burnham has failed to take them on today.
Andy Burnham must take Thames Water into special administration and keep it in permanent public ownership. And he can use legislation to make it easier to bring other water companies into public hands when they continue to fail to deliver.
It is time for a water system that truly works for us. Public ownership of water now. Nothing less will do.
🐟BREAKING: Scientists confirm Northeast Atlantic mackerel is being overexploited, advising only 352,938 tonnes should be caught next year‼️
This catch advice is the second-lowest in the last 15 years, showing the EXTREME fishing pressure our mackerel populations are under
Our oceans cover more than 70% of the planet, yet only about 10% of them are currently protected. This leaves important ocean habitats and marine life at risk.
Urge world leaders to deliver on their commitment to protect 30% of ocean habitat by 2030 today 👉 oceana.ly/48ImagU
🌿Studland Bay in Dorset, home to spiny & short-snouted seahorses, saw record numbers last year when a drop in visiting boats allowed the seagrass to recover.
Now extreme weather threatens this precious habitat, along with the seahorses that rely on it.

REMINDER: The world already has far more oil and gas than can ever be safely burned if we are to limit warming.
More North Sea drilling will do nothing to cut our energy bills, and make no meaningful difference to UK energy supply - but it will escalate climate harm.
Brilliant to see Andy Burnham recognising that privatisation and austerity have failed since the 1980s
and that "Britain's water industry is run in the private rather than public interest"
The answer is PUBLIC OWNERSHIP
There will be no public control without ownership

This is horrendous. A totally new meaning to the word 'protected'.
🚨 Out of 113 marine protected areas for wildlife like puffins & porpoises… only 2 have full protection from destructive bottom trawling, our new research shows
Protected in name only isn’t protection at all
📢 Ban #BottomTrawling in MPAs 🌊
Act now: bit.ly/oceanaukx
🌊 This is the reality behind ‘protected’ UK seas
Industrial bottom trawling bulldozing the seafloor & killing ocean wildlife
We can’t protect nature while leaving it open to such destruction 🚫
✊ Act now: bit.ly/oceanaukx
📢 Ban #BottomTrawling in MPAs
Andy Burnham needs to deliver public OWNERSHIP of the essentials 💧💡🚌🚄📮🏥
"Public control" won't do - it essentially just means more regulation
With natural monopolies, we don’t have choice as consumers, so we need accountability as citizens

💔 Devastating numbers of whales, porpoises, seals, dolphins and seabirds are dying every year in British waters, according to a new report showing the true scale of bycatch in the UK. Our ocean deserves so, so much better. We need govt action!

🌊 The race to protect 30% of our seas by 2030 is CRITICAL to a healthy planet & future. But it is utterly meaningless if those areas deemed to be 'protected', actually allow destructive activities, like bottom trawling, to take place within their boundaries.

"The ocean is part of everyday life - what’s in it, what’s taken from it, and how healthy it is all feeds back into communities on land. Even if you never see it, you’re still relying on it in some way.”

A year has rolled around, and we’ve yet to hear even a whisper of when the govt is going to properly protect our ocean havens from bottom trawling, after pledging to consider it LAST World Ocean Day. What's going on?! 😡 1/2

The problem with privatised water 💧
Around 90% of the world’s water is publicly owned - but England and Wales still run on a failed privatised system.
For too long, water companies have been aloud to extract cash from a public necessity, all while putting profits before people and public health.
The result? Polluted waterways, high bills and a system that isn’t working.
It’s time to end this failed experiment and bring England’s water back into public hands.
