I think we need to be realistic that class teachers are not Ed Psychs, psychologists, therapeutic experts, bouncers, social workers, the police etc. There needs to be a full recognition that their role is to teach the curriculum, not be all things to all people spread too thin.

Register for this FREE DistillED webinar with me and fellow expat educator @HughesHaili As evidence-informed practices spread through schools, they can become simplified, standardised or distorted until the original purpose gets lost. These are lethal mutations: practices that may still look right on the surface, but no longer work in the way they were intended. In this 45-minute session, Haili will unpack lethal mutations and how and why they happen, using research and real classroom examples. If you're a teacher, PD lead or school leader trying to embed evidence-informed practice, this one is for you. 📅 Saturday 24 October 🇦🇺 5:00 pm AWST / 8:00 pm AEDT 🇬🇧 10:00 am BST 🇺🇸 5:00 am EDT REPOST THIS & REGISTER luma.com/aott82if

One conclusion from my travels - UK, US, Canada, Australia - is that our global profession remains deeply scarred by decades of poor accountability-driven scrutiny dominated by delusional 'teacher evaluation' processes. The default teacher position is to be sceptical and resistant to observation processes and often PD itself. 'Just leave me alone' is a common starting point. It's requires a massive effort to build momentum around sustained PD and feedback cycles that people trust, opening themselves up enough to explore habit change.. Where it's happening it's magnificent; it feels like a triumph - but it also feels precarious; it doesn't take much to knock people off course. We're paying the price for all those years training up leaders to adopt the role of compliance checkers and 'quality assurers' rather than being true leaders of learning and teacher development. Takes real focus and changes in attitude to create the cultures of PD teachers crave.

In the current climate, one of the biggest issues we are facing in all countries is retaining our teachers. Only last week a survey revealed almost 1/2 of teachers in England intend to leave in the next 3 years. So Sam Gibbs and I wrote a book and it's out now!

What does inclusion in a classroom really look like? In our recent webinar on inclusion in education Dr @HughesHaili, Associate Professor at La Trobe University, joined @ProfKime to discuss what inclusion can look like in everyday classroom practice and how teachers can think more carefully about the choices they make. In this clip, Haili uses cold calling as an example. Rather than asking whether a teaching technique is simply “inclusive” or “not inclusive”, she suggests asking more useful questions: What is the purpose of the technique? Which pupils might be disadvantaged by it, and why? How can we reduce unnecessary barriers while preserving the part that supports learning? It’s a helpful shift away from thinking about inclusion as a list of strategies to use or avoid, and towards making thoughtful, purposeful adaptations based on the pupils, the content and the learning goal.
