Please join me in welcoming @RITscience scholar Krishna Tangirala to the Hudson Lab and our research team! Krishna is a first-year scholar from Brighton, New York, pursuing a BS/MS in Biotechnology and Molecular Biosciences/Biological Sciences through RIT’s Combined Accelerated Bachelors/Masters (CABM) program. With a passion for molecular and cellular biology, Krishna aspires to pursue a career in industry research, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. Outside the classroom and laboratory, he enjoys singing and cycling. Krishna will contribute to our ongoing research focused on antibiotic resistance and antibiotic discovery, particularly investigating natural products with potential antibacterial activity against the ESKAPE group of pathogens. We are excited to have Krishna join our team and look forward to supporting his growth as a young scientist while advancing our research on novel antibacterial compounds. Welcome to the Hudson Lab, Krishna!

What an absolute pleasure and privilege it was to meet Dr. Kip Thorne, Nobel Laureate in Physics, and his wonderful wife, Dr. Carolee Joyce Weinstein, during their visit to RIT! What struck me most about Dr. Thorne was his incredible humility, warmth, and approachability. Here is someone whose groundbreaking contributions have fundamentally shaped our understanding of the universe, yet he was so gracious and down to earth! It was also fascinating to hear about his contributions to science and cinema, particularly Interstellar, and how science can inspire creativity and storytelling. Heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Thorne on receiving an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from RIT! A well-deserved honor and recognition of his extraordinary contributions to science and society. We are honored to celebrate this milestone with him. A special thank you to Dr. Lisa (Cauda) Chase, Denise Acton and their team for their tremendous work in coordinating such a memorable visit. Thanks as well to Dr. Ricardo R. Figueroa for moderating an engaging conversation, Dr. Manuela Campanelli, and everyone who helped make this occasion possible. I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to President William H. Sanders and his wife, Emily, for graciously welcoming us into their home for a wonderful dinner and engaging conversation.

Some molecules, such as amino acids, exist as two variants that are each other’s mirror image. However, living organisms only contain one of these mirror images. How chemical asymmetry such as this could have emerged was long a mystery to chemists. Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai have been awarded the #NobelPrize in Chemistry 2026 for discovering a solution to this puzzle.

Thrilled to welcome another cohort of scholars from @RochesterPrepHS to campus for our RIT/RPHS Capstone Program! These talented high school scholars will spend the term conducting research in my lab focused on antibiotic resistance and antibiotic development, culminating in presentations of their work next semester. One of the things I love most about this program is that it goes well beyond the science. It creates an opportunity for high school scholars to engage, interact, work alongside and learn from members of our @RITscience research community, including undergraduate researcher Lily Fagan and our postdoctoral colleague Dr. Danae Kala Rodríguez Bardají, PhD. It is also great to welcome back a returning scholar from last year’s cohort who became a co-author on a publication with her fellow peers! That is a remarkable accomplishment and a great example of what can happen when we provide young scientists with authentic opportunities to engage in research. I can’t wait to see what this new cohort discovers. And who knows…perhaps there is another publication in their future! Each one, teach one!
