33 years ago tonight, 14 women went to bed thinking about their finals, future in STEM and the upcoming holiday season. They didn’t know that these dreams threatened a man’s sense of self worth and that they wouldn’t survive to see their goals and aspirations become a reality.

Congratulations Clara! I’ve been lucky enough to meet Clara a couple of times and she’s truly awesome.
We’re delighted to announce @ClaraMBarker as the new IOP Inclusion and Diversity Representative. Dr Barker says: ā€œI look forward to working with different groups who share a passion for physics but feel they cannot achieve their maximum potential. (1/2) iop.org/about/news/dr-clara-…

I can’t stop thinking, so I'm writing something. This is about the physics students of Gaza. 1/N

Victoria Wood is such a lyrical genius. So many triple rhymes and they work so well without sounding forced?! Current fave is ā€˜Rapport’s a thing you just can’t manufacture. You had an ideal girl, I couldn’t match her. I didn’t want to, it was Mrs Thatcher.’

Hot Stuff was playing in the cern canteen as I queued for food and it reminded me of this scene!

Went to a Swiss folk music festival. One band played an accordion/yodelling version of YMCA. Instead of ā€˜young man’ they said ā€˜yodel!’ Ridiculous, I love it here. – at Pregny-ChambĆ©sy, Suisse

That’s the second time I’ve told someone in French that I like their horses (chevaux) instead of their hair (cheveux). I realise when they look very confused. 🐓 Not quite as bad as my mum chronically confusing the words ā€˜profiterole’ and ā€˜suppository.’

Today in ā€˜English is weird’ it’s confusing that after 4, the word for a division and a multiple by that number is the same. A fifth of a year (division), a fifth anniversary (multiplication). It’s just the of that indicates division.

Guns don't do physics experiments, my dude šŸ™„. But LGBTQ+ people do. Physics is as much about the experiments and theories, as the people who do/come up with them. You literally can't do the one without the other.

Was fab to meet @iamwill ! Rocked out on the side of the stage to @bep then had some great physics conversations backstage and shared some face glitter. Physics, music and glitter; all the best things! āš›ļøšŸŽ¶āœØ
Great to catch up with @cern superfan yesterday @iamwill Sharing this lovely photo of him w/ @OxfordPhysics PhD student @HowlingEmily (follow her, she rocks) & Antonia Winkler before they launched into a long chat about #cosmology & what @cern has been up to since his last visit

Working with non-native English speakers is making realise how tricky and bizarre English can be. Just had to explain to someone that ā€˜those concerned’ and ā€˜those who are concerned’ have different connotations (relevant people vs worried people but the former can mean either).
