Halloween PSA: this movie is streaming for free on Pluto TV and Amazon Prime, not to mention a bunch of other streaming services. Besides HOCUS POCUS, I can’t think of another horror movie that carries that specific spooky-but-fun Halloween vibe more strongly (for me, anyway)!

HIGH ANXIETY might be Mel Brooks's most under-appreciated movie, and there's a great making of story in which after Brooks finished the film, a spoof on Alfred Hitchcock movies, he actually invited Hitchcock to review the film and give it his blessing. 20th Century Fox sets up the screening, Brooks and Hitchcock are now watching the movie together. The first joke happens, Hitchcock doesn't laugh. The next joke, same thing. Brooks is sweating because Hitchcock isn't laughing at *any* of the jokes or parodies. Finally the movie ends, Brooks is ready to receive any type of critique, but all Hitchcock does is stand up and walk out, not saying a word. Brooks is left feeling like not only is his new comedy garbage, but the director he's spoofing absolutely hates it.
Crushed, days later, Brooks walks into his office on the lot and sees a gift basket on his desk. Inside is a card that simply says, "Splendid. - Hitchcock"
I really love the opening of the INCREDIBLE HULK TV series! The moody music and voiceover really does a great job underlining the tragic, werewolf-like part of his story. It’s an aspect the MCU doesn’t really lean into that much, and I wish it did!

There’s a little of that tragic aspect in the first AVENGERS movie, but it seems to take a backseat as the franchise progresses (and THE AVENGERS doesn’t carry that vibe all the way through the movie). In fact, the MCU kinda soft-pedals the darker elements of Spider-Man, as well!
One of my favorite podcast subgenres is "thoughtful deep dives into junkfood pop culture," and I'm swiftly falling in love with this one. I've listened to part of one episode (about the commercials), & there's been lots of unironic praise for Jim Varney's acting skill. I love it!
For those who may be unfamiliar with Ernest P. Worrell, here's a taste:

In retrospect, this was probably the most significant event in TV Sitcom history.
On this day (October 15th) in 1951, "I Love Lucy" premiered on CBS-TV.
The show's original intro was similar to this one in 1955.
Incomprehensible to many people today, the financial backing from Philip Morris was a crucial part of the show's success. "I Love Lucy" became a cultural phenomenon. 🩶📺 – at Frisco, TX
Technically, I don’t work a blue-collar job. I do have a working-class job, though (retail), and TAXI gets really understands how it feels to work such a job, with the camaraderie between co-workers and how many workers see the job as a way station before moving to better things.

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has shared the following statement about the health of Pope Leo XIV:
“We express our heartfelt concern for Pope Leo XIV as he confronts health challenges and extend our sincere wishes for his comfort, strength, and a swift recovery. We join with people of faith around the world in praying that heaven will bless and sustain him during this time. May he feel the peace and healing power of our Savior, Jesus Christ.”

I’ve been reading John Scoleri & Peter Enfantino’s blog in which they rewatch one episode of KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER a day. I had to post this excerpt from a comment Scoleri made because it makes me long for something we don’t have. His SALEM’S LOT series idea sounds great!
So it turns out it’s not the World Series that’s happening. Thanks for not calling me out on my stupidity!
One more note on LITTLE BIG LEAGUE: I won’t pretend that I’m an expert (or even super knowledgeable) about baseball; I like the game but I’m barely a novice at best. However, the movie speaks with such a level of confident intelligence that you KNOW it’s getting everything right.
