Whatever happens Nov. 3, the hovering reality for Schumer, 75, is the ascendence of younger voters and the AOC-Mamdani effect focused on age and succession issues. But if the Senate flips, friends say, it will in the shorter term be time for detractors to do some fence-mending.
In the Newsday interview, Schumer says he's seeking to remains the Democratic Caucus leader again - no matter which party prevails Nov. 3; deflects about whether he will seek reelection in 2028; and friends say it might be time for those who counted him out...to reassess.
The fighting chance that Senate Democrats now hold, say experts and lawmakers, is a product of Schumer’s political skill, a Trump-induced political environment that few could have imagined a year ago, and luck — or all three, if not necessarily in that order.
Having faced episodes of liberal fury, low approval ratings and even calls to step down as Senate Democratic leader, Schumer tell Newsday his motto has remained: "Persist, persist, persist" ... and now the race for Senate control is now "neck and neck."

Gillibrand: "“This afternoon, a suspicious piece of mail was sent to my New York City office and was safely intercepted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. I am deeply grateful to the postal inspectors for protecting my staff.”
Correction here, an envelope was addressed to a Schumer office, but the precise one is not being released. And it was intercepted before reaching the destination.
Along with Schumer, the office of New York's other U.S. Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, confirms her office was also targeted for receipt of a suspicious letter on Thursday.
New York Senator Chuck Schumer’s Washington D.C. office was among intended targets of mysterious envelopes, at least some containing a white substance, his office has confirmed. Another source says the powder is "not a hazardous substance," or a threat.
