I defended NSW irrigators from illegal water buy backs for environmental flows to S.A. this week in Parliament. The NSW State and Federal Govts must understand that it’s not ok to steal 450GL of water from irrigation communities. Buy backs are a wrecking ball.

10 times worse than the last major fish kill in 2019. The Water Management Act 2000 stipulates reviews are required every 5 years yet they've never occured. Who will step up and try to fix this? xitter.cf/theprojecttv/status/16…
Few people outside of Menindee have heard of it before, a catastrophic fish kill five years ago. Now, millions of fish once again have been found dead as locals plead for more help from authorities. Water researcher @kate_mcbride_1 explains what is causing the mass deaths.

Replying to @MD_Basin_Auth
@MD_Basin_Auth released another report to approve NSW changes to the BDL by stressing how important it was to compare them to Cap - then in the next paragraph admitted it didn't formally assess the models against Cap or new "Cap scenario". It's worthless mdba.gov.au/publications/ind…

If the intention is to move to SDL reporting, surely someone needs to check the SDL is less than Cap. Unfortunately this has been ignored & NSW will licence over-extraction in northern NSW and the Commonwealth is looking to make up for it by taking further water from southern NSW
Thankfully it has rained a lot and water storages are full. However, in supermarkets today, supply is struggling to keep up with demand & food prices are soaring. More foresight is needed to protect food production in Aust Farmers need water to grow food theaustralian.com.au/nation/…

In 2020, Australian leaders were crowing that we are a country of 25 million producing food for 75 million. That statistic sounds absurd today if you visit a supermarket. We must protect those producing staples such as dairy, wheat, rice, fruits and beef. theaustralianfarmer.com/litt…

We would benefit greatly from a focus on improving food production. In recent years the dairy & rice industry (amongst other key staples) in the southern MDB have been negatively impacted by a lack of foresight and mismanagement of their main input, water smh.com.au/national/minister…

I’ve uncovered documents which show NSW officials know Water Minister Kevin Anderson’s #floodplainharvesting downstream targets are inadequate to protect the environment and may fall foul of the law. #nswpol

Water is taken from NSW Murray Valley resources each year to make up for lack of water coming down the Darling. There is no urgency by NSW to correct this and it's causing huge adverse impacts downstream. The Plan doesnt work with such a huge hole in it! abc.net.au/news/2022-06-02/t…

NSW DPI have responded to the Upper House Inquiry into Floodplain Harvesting. Their reason for an UNLIMITED rainfall runoff exemption is, because if it is not unlimited: "it may incentivise further growth in both infrastructure and diversions" (pg 11): ?? industry.nsw.gov.au/__data/a…

1/The NSW Government is about to issue new floodplain harvesting licences to irrigators in Northern NSW. These are estimated to be worth $1.5 billion - so it is reasonable to expect Treasury is part of the decision making. Or not? @Matt_KeanMP @Dom_Perrottet

NSW Supreme Court of Appeal upholds the decision to strike out the main defence of the MDBA to the class action brought by NSW Murray Valley irrigators. This is a big milestone in ensuring there is some accountability for actions and decisions being made that impact so many.

Floodplain harvesting isn’t unlawful, but the way it’s being licensed is. Confused? That might be the way politicians and bureaucrats have designed it. Article by director Maryanne Slattery in Broken Hill’s Barrier Truth today #NSWpol #floodplainharvesting

“Maryanne Slattery argued the NSW Dept. were "cooking up" a new cap, named the "Cap Scenario", in order to claim floodplain harvesting volumes will be licenced within legal limits.“ Fridays hearing will be very interesting... theland.com.au/story/7441374…
