In late 1988, Chinese students in Nanjing (and later Beijing, Wuhan) protested African exchange students after a Christmas Eve campus brawl over Chinese women visiting foreign dorms. Crowds chanted “beat/kill the black devils,” attacked dorms, and demanded their expulsion while also calling for democracy and equal rights. These were the first major student street actions in years and helped normalize protest tactics that fed into the spring 1989 Tiananmen movement. African students were targets, not allies; many left China afterward.
