So I put out my favorite 10 movies from the years 2000-2025 (260) plus another 200+ that I think you should watch last year (a passion project.) Next, I'll give you my favorite 28 movies from the century (01-25). Really tough to pare down. Only one sequel in the list...
Biggest issue in the @panthers loss today was the constant throwing for 20-30 yards on 3rd and 4, 5, 6, or 7. Why not throw for the sticks?
And in both losses, the Panthers D has a roughing the passer on a late, critical 3rd down and long.
Coaches, watch THAT tape.
I am very frustrated by the NFL’s roughing the passer rule. It’s way too soft. The refs are calling it right but my problem is with the rule itself.
In the same 5-day span I got…
A golf cart attendant tell me I look like Ryan Gosling. (floating)
A young lady at a Publix check out mockingly laugh when I started to grab my ID to buy beer. (humiliated)
This bums me out. The Observer was my lifeline to the Hornets since I left town and we had been blessed with outstanding coverage by some really good writers (better than the team deserved.)
Last week, exactly 10 days before my 5-year anniversary at The Charlotte Observer, my position was eliminated by McClatchy along with 7 of my colleagues.
And it happened less than 48 hours after being told corporate had given the green light to bring back my podcast they whacked two years earlier.
This means the paper of record that has covered the franchise since its inception in 1987 will no longer have a writer dedicated to giving readers the latest daily insight on the team. Training camp starts in two weeks.
During my career in this industry, which has spanned more than 25 years, I've had my share of tough assignments. Following in the footsteps of a legend and someone whose name is permanently affixed to two areas in Spectrum Center ranks right up there.
I'm grateful, thankful and forever humbled that I was the one chosen to take on the huge responsibility. And I'm proud of the content I produced. Every single bit of it, including a recent string of nothing but exclusives.
Thanks to all those who consumed my work and musings about the #Hornets. It's deeply appreciated.
Cheers to what's next.
My 9/11 story is too long to tell here. I had recently moved back from the West Coast - the events of that day directly led me to a 13-year career in Sports Information/Athletics Media Relations. When sports talking heads say the sports world shut down, that wasn’t entirely true.
It was awesome to reconnect with some coworkers but not for this reason. This one hit hard last night. Tom was a great boss but a better family man. He was a great example of how to do that job well. First place I stayed longer than 2 years because of the environment/culture.
It is with heavy hearts that the Charlotte 49ers community mourns the passing of former Charlotte Administrator Tom Whitestone.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family Kim, Sam, and Allie, and to the many student-athletes and colleagues whose lives were positively impacted by Tom 💚

I finally found this after looking for for about 6 weeks after trying some this summer. It’s the greatest thing I have ever scooped with a chip.
Add some cheese and bacon bits and you have yourself the perfect dip.
31 years ago today was the day Cal Ripken, Jr. broke baseball’s iron man streak. It was also my 21st birthday. I’ll never get that trivia question wrong in my lifetime.
20 years ago (9/2/06) I called my first Division I football game for ESPN and it was Virginia Tech’s opener (vs Northeastern). The whole day was a blur, but I remember Enter Sandman and the Hokey Pokey at the end of the third quarter.
Glad I got to know him a little when he came to Charlotte to work with the triple-A team where I worked one summer. When pregame meal was served, everyone flocked to him because he had so many stories of playing. Very generous with his time and genuinely nice person. He was 1/1.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tommy John, a veteran of 26 MLB seasons who helped revolutionize recovery from pitching injuries in the 1970s.
John broke in with Cleveland as a 20-year-old in 1963 and made his last appearance for the Yankees at age 46 in 1989, also pitching for the White Sox, Dodgers, Angels, and Athletics. The left-hander won 288 games, made 4 All-Star teams and anchored 3 pennant-winning teams, while twice finishing as a runner-up for the Cy Young Award. His 700 games started rank 8th on the all-time list.
After John injured his elbow in 1974, he received the first ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery from Dr. Frank Jobe. John returned to pitch in 1976, then won 20 games three times in four years from 1977-80.
He would go on to pitch 14 of his 26 seasons after the procedure that is now known as Tommy John Surgery, a measure that has helped extend pitching careers in the more than half a century since it was first performed.
He was 83.
Saw The Odyssey in true IMAX format last night. Breathtaking film. Not many directors are going to get a budget like that to do all the things C. Nolan did but it was simply a visual splendor. The scale was just astounding. See it on the largest screen you have access to.
I both agree and disagree. But I support everyone finding the thing they’re passionate about, no matter their entryway. Just take your time finding your way and forming hard opinions. Enjoy the ride because the ride is the point. It’s not a destination.
Quick week off so I brought my dad his late Father’s Day Buffalo Trace gifts. Leg one of the trip is done. With the usual loaded summer soccer schedule, I haven’t been to North Carolina in the summer since 2017.
I’ve been saying this for years. If Carolina EVER wear the Whalers sweater, all sales and proceeds for those games should go to shelters in the Hartford area. The winters are cold up there (not as cold as those poisonous owners ripping the team away) and those people were gutted.
