Govt has responded to ALL of Lord Leveson's 180 recommendations on criminal courts. As a result I expect many more online hearings, more non-court community resolutions & deferred prosecutions - and prison vans racing down bus lanes to get to court:

The Crown Court backlog is “under control” - says Criminal Bar Association chair Andrew Thomas on @LBC.
I’m sorry that is criminal.
The backlog is 80,000 - double what it was 7 years ago - and rising. Only radical structural change will bring it down, allied to extra funding.

Hundreds more prisoners are being freed today in the second phase of the early release scheme. Offenders serving up to two and a half years are leaving after serving a third of their sentence, rather than half, to help the government tackle overcrowding in prisons. It comes as probation officers prepare for a vote next week that could lead to strike action over pay and workload.

This case is horrendous. Also it is the second time I can think of a young male has killed a woman citing an obsession with 'Dexter'. Steven Miles was similarly so inspired and obsessed when he murdered Elizabeth Thomas a decade ago.

Why would anyone be letting this prisoner out early. He’s literally saying he’s going to go back out and steal again.
The government is creating unnecessary victims of crime by being soft on crime.

As prisoners are released today under the Early Release Scheme, serious questions remain about whether the criminal justice system is ready to manage the increased risk, particularly for victims of stalking.
❗️ We are extremely disappointed that this is going ahead. [1/4]

As the early release scheme begins, where is the urgency for IPP prisoners who have served their tariff & remain behind bars?
What about those serving life sentences under joint enterprise convictions, with little hope of appeal?
Their time is now.
