President Trump is not making a serious effort to address voters’ legitimate affordability concerns, despite his campaign promise to “end inflation” on “day one.” Instead, he has belittled such anxieties, referring to worries about high prices as a Democratic Party “con job” and “hoax,” and arguing that families should deal with higher prices by buying their children fewer “dolls” and “pencils.” Moreover, voters make connections between policy choices and inflation. By large margins, voters believe Mr. Trump’s trade war has raised prices — so much so that some GOP politicians are publicly breaking with the president on tariffs. And regardless of the merits of the Iran War, the American people seem to understand that it is responsible for high petrol prices. My @FT column.
