I FINISHED IN 13TH PLACE AT THE BALTIMORE 2027 REGIONAL! (Thread + Team Report)
Can I start by saying, this run went FARRR beyond expectation. I strongly dislike the pressure of first-of-format majors and the short prep window felt insane. Though I have folks I’ll occasionally bounce ideas off of, I ultimately do solo builds and craft in a way that fits my brain chemistry. Regardless, this was unironically the least confident I’d EVER gone into a regional. Ask my group, they’ll tell you all I did was whine about M-C and how I couldn’t foresee a deep run. Let’s talk about it

Never been a twitter person but you VGC people seem to really like it so I made one.
I got top cut at Louisville regionals, on my first day 2 and just 8 months after learning about this game. Cool to be the highest placing and only Indeedee-F in top cut at this tournament - my favorite VGC mon and where every one of my teams where she’s available starts in the builder.
I poured my heart into building this team, and despite going 0-3 in victory road, 1-2 at my local, and 0-2 start to the Friday league challenge with this exact version all in the week before the event, I knew the team was capable of this. All my losses were completely my fault and I think the team is incredible. I honestly did it a huge disservice by only being able to take it to 20th. I’d be honored if you gave it a try, and happy to make a team report if there’s any interest.
Ultimately, I was pretty shocked when I lost abruptly in top cut in a winning position to this little rule called “my time”🤣. The scriptwriters cooked when I coincidentally had a conversation with my friends the morning before day 2 saying “I have no idea how the timer works in VGC and I should probably learn that soon”. After losing in Baltimore by misclicking my move, I learned to take my time on my turns. Today, I learned not to take too much time. As much as I wanted to be a “prodigy” in my first few events, just like in life, you have to fail. And some lessons are best learned the hard way.
Huge shoutout to all my new friends in VGC, including @Konnichiwonnor, @HappyDuckJJ1 and of course @HitTheCritty, who saw something in me at my first regional and graciously brought me into the community when I used to do everything alone.
Loving this game, and I hope to be at every NA event and more this season. See you soon in Vegas.

Lopunny: Scrappy is insanely good rn. You drop ghold & froslass with CC, and out Basc in a range where they die from wave crash recoil. You’re the fastest fake out in the entire meta. Axel is great for chomp mence & venu and can still ohko a reasonably invested mega mence at -1. Tpunch came more into play in prep. Good into sitrus peli and reliable dmg for zard, but can reasonably be swapped out for encore or protect.
Indeedee: Mystical fire is insanely slept on as a tech. Do I need to explain how many sp atk’ers run the meta? Guaranteed dmg mitigation paired with a cm stacking garde is great synergy. I’ve never had a mu where I regretted not Psychic/Terrain Pulse. Not to mention you get reliable dmg into ghold & goli
Garde: I started with the calm mind variant and never changed it. It gets SO much use in the mirror. Pretty self explanatory idea here
Dnite: Dclaw may be safer but Scale Shot is simply one of my favorite competitive moves. It only takes two. SS hits to drop a mence after one dragon dance. +1 stomping tantrum drops ghold and is a roll for incin (have to be +2 for arch). We know by now why rock slide is good in Champions, and I needed another spread on the team. You can argue Protect on him, but I assure you all moves get used evenly (for me). Only drawback of adamant is not outspeeding ychu or phox at +1 speed
Ceru: Jolly needed to creep Basc & Ghold. Sash means you always win against non-sash Basc. +2 bitter blade gets Goli through rain. CC is solely to guarantee you win the incin 1v1, while helping with arch.
Sneas: I debated on rock slide or tomb over tchop till the very end. I had more games with chop but you can argue all 3 evenly imo. Fake Out is swappable but only kinda. Certain floette mu’s are better for leading sneas than lopunny for instance.
Cons:
One protect: this is the seemingly universal point of contention against the team. Protect is inarguably the most important move in the game. Yes, I top cutted regardless, but (contrary to popular belief) I’m not a player who enjoys running protect-less teams. I’m just very comfortable giving it up for specific coverage. If it’s your comfort move, slap it on the team where you see fit (ie tpunch lopunny, CC ceru)
Harc: Harc is not necessarily a difficult pokemon to play against, but it can be difficult to prevent it from getting off uneven damage trades because only two mons on my team naturally outspeed it
Metagross (especially steel roller variant): positioning ceru becomes crucial, simple as that. Steel roller may just be an autoloss I fear.
Six inaccurate moves: I’m counting t-axel as 3, but yeah, moves can miss. I had three harmless rock slide misses across sets that always a little annoying, but if ANY of my poltergeists missed, I lose multiple games this weekend.
Me: As you’d assume, I approach this game very specifically. I’ve been told I build “bo1 teams for bo3.” There’s some truth as I do like transferability between the two for GCs, but it makes the learning process a bit harder to pick up.
