This wasn’t made to be a replacement for any other tool. It was made exclusively to replicate the online experience of Pokémon Bank after the servers go down. Wokann’s first test build was shared with me in August and he has been working on it since then. Wokann made the decision to openly disclose his use of AI-assistance over that two month period. In my opinion, this is the correct path forward. Wokann fully understood each element of the mod, tested it thoroughly, and worked with the community to ensure it was feature rich and reliable. Projects like PKSM are also likely using similar tools; though, unlike Wokann you will not find its maintainer disclosing the usage of AI. Perhaps the reason that the AI-assistance is hidden is because there is no room for a nuanced discussion about its use in this community. Claude made a single commit to PKSM in August, and over the next few days the maintainer for PKSM committed 20,000 character changes to the project. Could that have all been done by hand? Perhaps, but I’ll let each of you decide. I would like to have faith that the developer for PKSM is also utilizing the AI-assistance tools in a reasonable way. Understanding the output and testing the results. Though if you start digging you’ll find that nearly every developer on the planet is using AI whether they tell you or not. This is not a witch hunt, it is just a point of reference that should be taken into account if you were blindly calling one project “ai vibecoded slop” while also blindly believing that the other is superior and 100% human made. As someone who studied computer science at the University of Toronto and has many years of programming experience I have decided where to draw my line. These tools can exceed anything I am able to write by hand. These tools are able to exceed or match the smartest people in the world. And the smartest people can utilize them to do amazing things. I do not like that these AI tools exist. I wish they did not. However, they do exist and I don’t think that the people who use them are inherently evil people. Much like I don’t agree with factory farming but don’t think people who eat chicken are evil. I don’t agree with the fossil fuel industry but I don’t think that people who drive cars are evil. Responsible usage, responsive consumption, and responsible disclosure are all important. Personally I believe Wokann has not used these tools irresponsibly, nor has he hidden their usage. I’m sorry if sharing this project has upset members of the community. However, I want to be part of cool projects like this, I want to encourage responsible disclosure, and I want to be a part of the future that is approaching faster than any of us can prepare for. If you are worried about Wokann creating “vibe-coded slop” I’ve attached a screenshot that shows just how long he has been working on this project. If you think that the alternatives you know and love would never stoop so low as to utilize AI in their workflow I’ve attached a screenshot showing PKSM’s suspected AI usage. I do not believe we are going to be able to close Pandora’s box on this one. Though we can push for responsible usage and disclosure. Nuanced discussion is how we all move forward together.

My friend has released his offline patch for Pokémon Bank! It can download the Pokémon you currently have stored online as a backup, move Pokémon in and out of 3DS titles, and has a fully offline version of Poké Transporter! Wokann has even implemented the old Pokémon Bank mystery gifts & the option to transfer VC Pokémon using the old random genders of version 1.2!
