Rabobank expects 40 mtpa of new non-Qatari LNG capacity in 2027 and another 50 mtpa in 2028. That's a credible basis for lower prices, but capacity isn't supply, and supply isn't necessarily competitive. The LNG wave may be coming. Its timing, utilization and price effects remain uncertain. media.rabobank.com/asset/d56…

One of the worlds potential largest uranium projects is hereby put in the grave. BHP are not ramping up uranium production signifiantly anytime soon šŸ‘
In 2011, Olympic Dam šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗ secured environmental approval for the project that would have quadrupled its #uranium output: an open pit alongside the underground mine, lifting production to about 41.9 Mlb U3O8 a year. Over the last twelve months, Olympic Dam as a whole produced about 8.0 Mlb. For scale, those 41.9 Mlb would equal 17% to 21% of the reactor requirements the Red Book 2026 projects for 2035 (203-240 Mlb a year) ⚔ In August 2012, $BHP shelved the expansion to study a less capital-intensive design. Now, fourteen years later, today’s quarterly report removes the open-pit resource altogether šŸ“‰ (last row of the table, empty). According to the company, the remaining shallow mineralisation no longer warrants reporting, and the relevant portion has been reassessed as underground mining. In its place, BHP reports for the first time a block cave resource of 10,730 Mt, with not a single tonne converted to reserves. Its uranium grade is 0.19 kg/t U3O8, versus 0.46 in the resource that supports the current mine (SLOS). Getting the same pound of uranium would mean mining and processing about 2.4 times more rock. Copper tells the same story (0.59% versus 1.56%). BHP frames it as bulk, non-selective mining designed for large continuous volumes of rock and, in its own words, ā€œits potential development timeframe is not yet knownā€. One of the largest uranium deposits in the world is still there, but with no plan to extract it quickly. If that ever changes, it will probably depend more on copper (the mine’s main metal) than on the uranium price: extensions to the mining lease are already tied to investments in the smelter and the concentrator, not to anything related to uranium. šŸ“Ž Sources: BHP, Operational review Q1 FY27 (20 Oct 2026); BHP Billiton 20-F FY2012; World Nuclear News (22 Aug 2012); Red Book 2026.

Asian spot LNG prices topped $30 per mmBtu for the first time since December 2022, after a reported attack on an LNG carrier off Yemen. Asia and Europe are racing to lock in winter gas while Qatari supply stays disrupted. #LNG #NaturalGas #Energy oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-N…

Electricity is getting more expensive for several reasons. Yes some is investment in the grid, some is levies nothing to do with generating or distribution costs that should be removed. But the main culprit is gas which pushes up the bills largest component the wholesale price.

TankerTrackers reports little apparent correlation between Iranian tanker attacks and Hormuz oil flows. Crude exports are at postwar highs, with LNG and product flows rising. The momentum of a system moving civilization’s master resource is hard to stop—especially when risk is profitable.
Going strong. The Iranian attacks on tankers are actually not having too much of a negative effect on what is coming out of the region. Crude oil exports are highest since February, but now the priority is shifting towards LNG and refined products.

Despite all the consternation around natural gas demand from data centers, it doesn't really move the needle compared to total US production (<5%). @CatalystPod Wood Mackenzie’s analysis indicates up to 5 billion cubic feet per day, or Bcf/d, of additional behind-the-meter gas demand over five years. McGuire compares that with approximately 19–20 Bcf/d of existing LNG export demand and recent US production of approximately 112–113 Bcf/d. Both LNG and data centers create relatively steady demand, reducing the flexibility available when heating demand rises sharply.

- For context, US battery EV share of new car sales is around 6%, and peaked at 10% as tax credits expired in Sep 2024 - Weird to have countries like Malta on this chart and not the US, the 2nd largest auto market in the world. Recent US trend, despite decline, does not look so different from Greece, which is still shown? - Noting @ember_energy 's choice of "Taiwan (China)"... disappointing.
"You wouldn't know it if you live in the USA or consume US media...but the fight between EVs and ICEs is basically over. Internal combustion is on it's way out. First it'll look slow, then fast. Fleet turnover will lag sales. But ALL the growth globally is in EVs." -@JesseJenkins

Oil shipping costs spike, lifting prices from pump to grocery When the oil supertanker Esteem Explorer sails from the United States to Japan in late November, loaded with about 2 million barrels of crude, the journey will cost $81 million. The same journey would have cost $9.1 million last year, on average. The shipping cost translates into $40.50 per barrel, ā€Œabout nine times last year's rate. Every $10-per-barrel increase in shipping costs adds about 23 cents per gallon to gasoline, said Kenneth Medlock, a fellow in energy and resource economics at the Houston-based Baker Institute for Public Policy. On that basis, the Esteem Explorer's shipping cost works out to at least 80 cents more per gallon of gasoline than last year, according to Reuters calculations. "It's sort of like a slow-moving train. It doesn't all happen instantly ... but the longer this drags on, the more sticky it becomes, which means you get more of a sustained impact at the grocery store, in the convenience store, at the mall," Medlock said. "Everything gets more expensive because that's how we move stuff around." (Bloomberg)
