College football is back — and the best stories aren’t always the biggest headlines. 🏈
A former backup high-school QB who became the FBS passing leader. A homecoming in Bloomington. A QB who waited three years for his shot. And a rivalry returning for the first time since 1984.
Here’s what changed today.

For the TikTok caption, I’d keep it punchy and make people want to stop and read the graphic:
College football stories you probably missed 👀🏈
A former Oregon State star facing his old team. An Indiana QB coming home as the opponent. An 8th-year college football player. A lacrosse recruit turned Notre Dame captain. And two journeys you have to see to believe.
This is WHAT CHANGED TODAY?
The stories behind college football that don’t always make the headlines.

College football is back — and here are six stories you probably DIDN’T know heading into this weekend.
🏈 Boise State linebacker Mana Tuioti is playing Oregon… where his DAD coaches and TWO of his brothers are on the other sideline. Talk about a family rivalry.
🏈 Archie Griffin’s grandson, Dianté Griffin, spent four years at Ohio State. Now he plays for Ball State — and Saturday he goes BACK to the Shoe to play against the Buckeyes.
🏈 Utah has a 317-POUND TIGHT END. Semi Taulanga is 5-foot-11, 317 pounds… and yes, they actually throw him the football.
🏈 UCF freshman Preston Hall has an incredible football bloodline. His dad Ahmard served four years in the Marines, walked on at Texas, won a national championship and then played six seasons in the NFL.
🏈 Texas State coach G.J. Kinne originally PLAYED at Texas before transferring to Tulsa. Nearly 20 years later, he’s returning to Austin — as the opposing head coach.
🏈 And Michigan’s new backup quarterback Tommy Carr? His grandfather is national-championship coach Lloyd Carr, his dad played quarterback at Michigan, and his older brother CJ starts at Notre Dame.
🚨 THE SEC JUST BACKED DOWN — CLEARING THE WAY FOR LSU TO ADD FORMER NFL PLAYERS
The SEC has informed attorneys that it will comply with the Louisiana court order blocking the conference from punishing schools for using players who previously signed professional contracts. (au.sports.yahoo.com)
That means LSU is now moving forward with Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.
Both were in the NFL this summer.
Wright signed with the Cleveland Browns, while Harris signed with the New Orleans Saints before being waived. Now both are expected to sign with LSU. (au.sports.yahoo.com)
The SEC had just created a rule banning former pros from returning — with potential penalties including a half-season head-coach suspension and a fine equal to 50% of the sport’s athletic budget.
But after a Louisiana judge blocked those penalties, the SEC has now confirmed it will comply with the order while it remains in effect. (au.sports.yahoo.com)
Hidden Intel: LSU challenged one of the strangest eligibility situations college football has seen — and for now, the Tigers won. Two players who signed NFL contracts this summer are on track to return to the SEC.

🚨 A FORMER UCF STAR IS GOING FROM THE NFL PATH BACK INTO THE TRANSFER PORTAL
Former UCF safety Phillip Dunnam plans to enter the transfer portal after a Dallas TRO granted him another year of college eligibility. (sports.yahoo.com)
Here’s where it gets wild:
Dunnam’s college career was over. He went through the NFL process and even participated in Tennessee Titans rookie minicamp this spring. (ucfknights.com)
Now he’s eligible for college football again — and immediately headed to the portal.
Dunnam started all 12 games for UCF last season, finishing with 60 tackles and 3 INTs while earning All-Big 12 recognition. (ucfknights.com)

🚨 WEST VIRGINIA HAS ITS NEW STARTING QB
Oklahoma transfer Michael Hawkins Jr. is expected to win WVU’s starting quarterback job, beating out sophomore Scotty Fox Jr. after a fall-camp battle. (dominionpost.com)
Rich Rodriguez had intentionally kept the decision quiet, even suggesting fans might not know until the offense took the field for the opener.
Hawkins brings SEC experience after spending two seasons at Oklahoma. He threw for 783 yards as a true freshman in 2024 and made four starts before serving as John Mateer’s backup last season. (dominionpost.com)
His fit with Rodriguez is especially interesting: Hawkins is a legitimate dual-threat QB joining an offense built around quarterback mobility and the read option.
Hidden Intel: Rich Rod kept WVU’s QB decision under wraps throughout camp — but the former Oklahoma starter is now expected to beat out returning sophomore Scotty Fox Jr. and take QB1.

🚨 TCU’S LOCKER-ROOM ALTERCATION IS NOW IMPACTING BOTH PLAYERS INVOLVED
TCU WR Dozie Ezukanma did not travel to Ireland for Saturday’s opener against North Carolina and is reportedly still recovering from injuries suffered in the Aug. 13 locker-room altercation. (aol.com)
Projected starting safety Jacob Fields was already dismissed from the program following the incident.
Ezukanma remains on TCU’s roster, but he won’t be with the Horned Frogs for their season opener in Dublin.
Sonny Dykes addressed the incident publicly Thursday for the first time, calling it “unfortunate” while saying he doesn’t expect it to impact the team against UNC. (aol.com)
Hidden Intel: TCU already lost its projected starting safety because of the locker-room incident — now the other player involved didn’t even make the trip to Ireland.

🚨 USC MAY OPEN THE SEASON WITHOUT ITS TOP RETURNING WR
Sophomore Tanook Hines is a game-time decision for Saturday’s opener against San Jose State, Lincoln Riley said Thursday. (sports.yahoo.com)
Hines has been ramping up in practice over the last 10–14 days after an offseason medical procedure, but Riley says USC still has a decision to make.
He caught 34 passes for 561 yards and 2 TDs as a true freshman last season.
USC’s depth chart lists Hines OR Corey Simms at one receiver spot, with true freshmen Trent Mosley and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt listed as starters at the other two. (sports.yahoo.com)
Hidden Intel: USC could open 2026 without its top returning receiver — potentially putting even more responsibility on an unusually young WR room.

🚨 WISCONSIN COULD BE DOWN TWO STARTING O-LINEMEN VS. NOTRE DAME
Luke Fickell says the Week 1 status of projected starters Kevin Heywood and Emerson Mandell remains up in the air ahead of Wisconsin’s opener against Notre Dame at Lambeau Field.
Mandell, who started 12 games last season, underwent foot surgery in the spring and has yet to practice during fall camp.
Heywood suffered a lower-body injury during the first week of camp and has been sidelined since. (buckys5thquarter.com)
Wisconsin has already been preparing alternatives.
Stylz Blackmon and Arkansas transfer Blake Cherry have received increased work at guard, while Florida State transfer Lucas Simmons-Johannson has been filling in for Heywood at tackle. (buckys5thquarter.com)
Fickell says decisions on the two starters will have to be made in the coming days.
Hidden Intel: Wisconsin could enter its showcase opener against Notre Dame without two projected starting offensive linemen — including one who hasn’t practiced all fall camp.

🚨 WISCONSIN MAY HAVE A SURPRISE WR EMERGING
Oklahoma State transfer Shamar Rigby spent much of the offseason playing catch-up.
He missed part of spring practice and entered fall camp limited by injury.
Now Luke Fickell says Rigby is going to be “really important” for Wisconsin this season and believes he has “really, really high potential.”
Rigby caught 25 passes for 351 yards at Oklahoma State last season, but wasn’t necessarily the headline name among Wisconsin’s transfer WR additions.
That may be changing.
After finally getting healthy, Rigby made a significant push late in camp and is positioning himself for substantial snaps in Wisconsin’s new-look offense.
Hidden Intel: One of Wisconsin’s potential breakout transfer receivers barely practiced this spring — and was still limited entering camp. Now Fickell says he could be really important.

🚨 TEXAS JUST TURNED A 5-FOOT-10 SAFETY INTO A LINEBACKER
Texas has moved junior Jordon Johnson-Rubell from safety to WILL linebacker following the dismissal of Ty’Anthony Smith.
Johnson-Rubell has spent his first two seasons at defensive back, but there’s an interesting reason the move is possible:
He went from 189 pounds to 212 pounds this offseason.
The former four-star safety has appeared in 25 games for Texas and has been a significant special-teams contributor.
Now, with Texas suddenly thin at inside linebacker, the Longhorns are moving him into the room just before the season.
Hidden Intel: Texas lost a potential contributor at linebacker — and responded by converting a 5-foot-10 safety who added 23 pounds this offseason into one.

🚨 USC IS ABOUT TO START A LOT OF TRUE FRESHMEN
USC’s first official 2026 depth chart lists four true freshmen as outright starters for Saturday’s opener:
• WR Trent Mosley
• WR Kayden Dixon-Wyatt
• TE Mark Bowman
• DE Luke Wafle
And there could be a fifth.
Freshman CB Elbert “Rock” Hill IV is listed with an OR alongside Chasen Johnson at corner. (usctrojans.com)
The most striking part: Wafle is listed ahead of sixth-year DE Zuriah Fisher, while Mosley, Dixon-Wyatt and Bowman have all climbed directly to the top of their position groups before playing a college snap.
USC signed the nation’s consensus No. 1 recruiting class.
We’re already seeing the impact.
Hidden Intel: Four true freshmen are currently listed as USC starters — and a fifth could join them in Week 1.

🚨 VIRGINIA COULD GET KAM ROBINSON BACK JUST 9 MONTHS AFTER A TORN ACL
Virginia LB Kam Robinson tore his ACL on Nov. 15.
Nine months later, UVA has already listed him as its starting MIKE linebacker for Saturday’s opener against NC State.
Tony Elliott says Robinson is back practicing and “pretty much doing everything,” although the final decision on whether he plays won’t come until game time.
Robinson had said in July that he expected to be ready for the opener.
He’s now remarkably close to pulling it off.

🚨 BRUTAL ALABAMA INJURY NEWS
Alabama DL Jeremiah Beaman will miss the entire 2026 season after tearing his ACL in Sunday’s practice, according to Yea Alabama.
It’s the second consecutive season Beaman has suffered a season-ending ACL tear. (tide1009.com)
Beaman started Alabama’s 2025 opener against Florida State before tearing his ACL in practice the following week and missing the rest of the season.
He spent nearly a year rehabbing, returned for fall camp and was competing for a significant role along Alabama’s defensive front.
Now, before playing another regular-season snap, his season is over again.
Beaman underwent surgery this week. (on3.com)
Hidden Intel: Jeremiah Beaman fought all the way back from a torn ACL — only to suffer another season-ending ACL tear before getting to play again.

🚨 WASHINGTON JUST GOT A 325-POUND SEC TRANSFER BACK
Washington DT Kai McClendon took his first 11-on-11 team snaps Tuesday after missing the entire 2025 season with a knee injury.
The former Mississippi State starter began with the second unit — then later got three snaps with Washington’s No. 1 defense.
And his third snap back was an immediate impact play: McClendon deflected a Demond Williams Jr. pass that ended up intercepted by LB Buddah Al-Uqdah.
McClendon started the final five games of his true-freshman season at Mississippi State in 2024 before losing all of last year to injury.
Washington is still determining how quickly it can work him into the rotation.
But after roughly a year without full team reps, the Huskies already had him taking snaps with the first-team defense on Day 1 back.
Hidden Intel: Washington may have just added a major piece to its defensive front without making a roster move.
