Really enjoyed getting a closer look at what’s happening at the University of Arizona today. President Suresh Garimella, Shawn Domagal-Goldman, Dr. Erika Hamden and the team took us through some of the work underway across astrophysics and planetary science, including an up-close look at the Magnum Telescope. We also had a packed house of students with a lot of great questions about where NASA is going and how they can be part of it. @uarizona has contributed to NASA missions for generations. So great to see that legacy continuing and meet some of the people who will carry it forward.

I love visiting students who are growing up in a world where America is returning to the Moon, building a Moon Base, preparing to get underway under nuclear power, and launching missions to unlock the secrets of the universe. The students at the University of Arizona are already playing a part, just as this institution has since the earliest days of America’s space program. From incredibly badass missions like OSIRIS-REx, to NIRCam on Webb and HiRISE at Mars, to their work on LEMS that NASA astronauts will deploy on the lunar surface, and now Pandora studying exoplanet atmospheres, this university has its fingerprints all over the great frontier. Just so exciting to be around and witness.
Another packed house for the NASA Inspiration Tour! @NASAAdmin is at @UArizona today, meeting with students and sharing what’s ahead for America’s space program. Great to see so many students eager to help shape the future of American space exploration!

Happy 17th birthday, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter! 🎂 Seventeen years ago, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) blasted off to map the Moon in unprecedented detail. The Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) experiment launched with LRO, intentionally crashing into the Moon to investigate water ice and permanently shadowed craters. 🚀🌕 Since the launch, LRO's amazing images and global datasets have transformed how we explore, revealing safe landing zones, charting rugged terrain, and illuminating the Moon’s thermal and geologic story. And the story isn't done yet: USGS will continue working with LRO, expanding lunar mapping, hazard assessment, and data infrastructure to support future Artemis‑era missions and the next generation of lunar science. Here’s to the mission that turned pixels into pathways for future astronauts and discoveries! Happy launchiversary, LRO! 🎉 📸1: Launch of LRO and LCROSS in 2009: LRO begins its journey to redefine lunar exploration.” (Credit: NASA) 📸2: Tycho crater central peak from an oblique angle, showing a house-sized boulder resting at the top. When planets form, there is nearly 100x more gas than solids present yet we see a fraction of that gas in the solar system. Research with LPL student Naman Bajaj as lead author seeks to answer the question of when and how the remaining gas left the system. news.arizona.edu/story/james…

See that speck? It’s me! From Mars orbit! 👋 The @HiRISE instrument aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted me on Dec. 29, 2023. It's a good reminder of how big the Red Planet really is.

One month from today the #OSIRISREx spacecraft will touch down on Earth after its historic journey to collect samples from asteroid Bennu. The end of that mission is just the beginning of the investigation process for @uarizona researchers. Here’s a primer for anyone out of the loop recently: bit.ly/3KR2Y7s
