GOT, NOT GOT SUNDERLAND BY BILL HEARN GOT, NOT GOT SUNDERLAND is a treasure trove of memories and memorabilia for any fan - guaranteed to whisk you back in time to Roker Park and a red and white-tinted Golden Age of mud and magic. Just like it says on the cover, this ‘Little Book of Mackem Memories’ is jam-packed with all the trappings of a Sunderland-mad 20th-century childhood. Open it up, and revisit the Lost World that revolved around miniature table-top football, stickers and comics as well as the sky-high promise of Saturday afternoons. The book celebrates a more innocent era of football, lingering longingly over relics from the good old days – Sunderland shirts, petrol freebies and league ladders, badges, programmes and much more. Whether you made your big-match debut under Bob Stokoe or Peter Reid, this is the book to recall the cult heroes – Hughes, Montgomery and Tueart; Gabbiadini, Quinn and Phillips – and the marvels of a vintage collection that’s 100 per cent Sunderland. They don’t make fan favourites, rosettes or Cup Final singles like this any more! He watched his first League game in 1965 and saw his heroes go one up in the very first minute. ‘Supporting Sunderland is going to be great,’ he thought. Ninety minutes later he trudged away from Roker Park bemoaning a 2-1 defeat at the hands of a Wolves side that was relegated to Division Two only a few days later. Since then, the 1973 FA Cup win, various promotions and the current ascendancy of the club have made the many disappointments and relegations bearable. Bill is a historian and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His previous publications include Football’s Black Pioneers – The Stories of the First Black Players to Represent the 92 League Clubs, which includes a section on Sunderland’s Roly Gregoire.
