Interesting analysis of why COVID-19 requires a 3rd booster vaccine by looking at *most* other vaccines which require multiple doses

As we await more data on #Omicron If you are an vaccinated adult (6 months out) This is a good time to go get a booster It'll dramatically reduce your risk of infection from Delta (still the biggest threat by far) And will likely increase your protection against #Omicron

the most interesting movement in today's chart is not in the 80+, but in the under-20s, which seem to be losing growth momentum. 1/2

Absolutely love the triple-scale chart @TravellingTabby implemented for Scotland here: travellingtabby.com/scotland… so I thought I'd show one for the whole UK. I've offset the admissions and deaths numbers (6 and 14 days respectively) to make the main point more clearly.

Did you hear vaccinated people with Delta “have just as much virus in their nose so are just as infectious as unvaccinated”? Turns out vaccinated people have significantly less culturable virus present at the same Ct count They are LESS INFECTIOUS 💥 medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Debunking antivaxxers' assertions that cases in Iceland mean vaccines don't work: health officials in Iceland report vaccines preventing 60% of vaccinated from any infection and 90% against serious illness. 97% of vaccinated cases have mild or no symptoms. reuters.com/article/factchec…

Breaking down Ontario's cases, hospitalizations, and deaths by vaccine status - using all pop for cases, and adult pop for hospitalization and death (rough calc). Vaccine efficacy is 87.5% against COVID-19, 94.7% against hospitalization, and 99.3% against ICU The vaccines work

So, if vaccination doesn't work we should expect 8.9 times more vaxxed people in hospital than vaxxed. We actually see 0.67 times. Vaccines only work on the vaxxed, so they've "squished down" that ratio by protecting the vaxxed. "Squishing" 0.67 / 8.9 = 0.075. = 92.4% effective.

More good news for Scotland - cases have been falling for a couple of weeks and now the number of people in hospital with a positive COVID diagnosis looks to have started to fall too.

Even better than that. Portion of population currently double dosed represents 96% of total pop covid hospitalisation risk pre-vaccines (Great JCVI strategy for risk targeting). Only accounting 3% of Delta is in keeping with vax effectiveness 97% against hospitalisation.
Missed opportunity for government comms here. You could say '45% of people have had two vaccine doses. But they only make up 3% of people hospitalised by Delta variant'.
