In a small mountain town there lived a clockmaker named Elias who never sold a clock that chimed. People thought him strange. Every other shop filled the square with bells and hours. His shop was quiet. A wealthy merchant once entered and demanded the finest clock in the town. Elias showed him a plain wooden case with no bell, no gong, no striking hammer. “It tells the time,” Elias said, “but it does not announce it.” The merchant laughed. “What good is time if no one hears it?” He bought a loud clock from the shop across the street and left.
