There's an increasing amount of research about the benefits of volunteering, not just on mental wellbeing but also real positive effects on physical health. Volunteering not only gets you more physically active, but the connection and satisfaction we get from helping others can soothe our stress response, reduce inflammation and risk of other illness and boost our mental health. Magic, eh? ✨ If you're looking for a volunteering opportunity, search our directory at befriending.co.uk to find a befriending service near you. buff.ly/4agteDA

Befriending can be the best way to put a smile on someone's face. This afternoon we're sharing the story of Natasha and Jeanette, a befriending match at @HelloTogetherCo . Their shared sense of humour has helped them bond and develop a wonderful friendship. Read or listen to the full case study: buff.ly/3Ywy8H3 Volunteer and Saltdean resident Natasha, 52, wanted to help in her local community and give something back. She was matched with Jeanette, 93, who has lived in Saltdean for 30 years, and was keen to meet new people. “Jeanette is so inspirational and wise. I learn a lot from her. It’s a pleasure to be in her company, and to make friends with someone from a slightly older generation is amazing... It makes you feel like we can all get on, no matter what our age, ethnicity, or circumstances, and no matter how cheeky the person is…We laugh a lot. It’s so light-hearted.” If you have a befriending story you want to share, tag us and us #BefriendingWeek!
