72 pounds of trash today makes it over 3,000 pounds paddled out of Pittsburgh's Ohio River since mid-May.
I was rewarded with an adirondack chair, my 5th in the past 4+ years I've taken home for re-use. Also, used my kayak as a Towboat to push this tire with a rim to shore.
44 plastic bottles included in the 2 bags of trash removed. – at Pittsburgh, PA

I really want to take a minute for the Nolichucky Dam. For roughly 36 hours during Helene, it was believed the dam was nearing failure as cracking noises and ground shaking could be felt around the area.
Around midnight, the situation became even more serious as the realization set in that the dam could actually fail. A Flash Flood Emergency was issued downstream and reverse 911 calls started going out to people in the area telling them to evacuate.
Thankfully, the dam held. Had this thing failed with the amount of water coming down the Nolichucky, many more people would have lost their lives.
Also, a huge shoutout to 99.5 WGRV for staying on the air and providing continuous coverage through the night as people were evacuating and trying to figure out what was happening. Local radio really mattered that night because many wifi providers and cell towers were going offline as power was being cut off due to the river taking out lines.
Today marks two years since Helene devastated parts of East Tennessee and changed our communities forever.
Looking back, I still find it difficult to process exactly what happened. We knew a significant flooding event was possible, but reading the forecasts beforehand and trying to imagine the scenario that eventually unfolded almost seemed unthinkable.
Never did I think the river I played in as a kid would become something capable of taking lives, homes, roads, bridges and entire pieces of infrastructure with it. That river was the Nolichucky.
As Helene moved through the region, tremendous amounts of water poured out of the mountains. Parts of western North Carolina received 12 to more than 20 inches of rain, with much of that water eventually draining into rivers flowing toward East Tennessee. At its peak, an estimated 1.2 million gallons of water per second flowed over Nolichucky Dam.
Five state owned bridges were destroyed, dozens of sections of state highway were closed, communities were cut off, and thousands of people suddenly found themselves dealing with a disaster few could have imagined just days earlier.
Here in Greene County, it quickly became personal for me.
The flooding damaged water infrastructure serving much of the county. As that first day went on, many people didn't realize our water system had switched to a backup supply and that we would soon run out. Much of the county would spend days, and in some places weeks, without running water.
Three bridges connecting the southern end of the county to the rest of the area were also lost. Trips that once took minutes suddenly took two or three times as long just to get into town for water, food and other basic supplies.
During those first few days, I spent almost every waking hour gathering information and relaying it through social media and to volunteers. That's actually how many of you found this page.
I'll always be grateful that during such a chaotic and unimaginable time, so many people trusted the information I was providing. But I also won't forget how difficult those days were. It seemed like every few minutes something else devastating was happening. Another road was gone, another bridge had failed, another community needed help, another person was missing.
Something I will never forget is people didn't wait to be asked to help. Trailers loaded with bottled water and supplies began arriving. Neighbors helped neighbors recover whatever could be salvaged from flooded homes. Volunteers searched for the missing. Churches, businesses, and individuals opened their doors. It was a sense of community that I have never seen before.
Ultimately, 17 people lost their lives on the Tennessee side of the disaster.
Today we remember the people we lost and the people and first responders that stepped in.

Fun fact about Dolly Parton: She earned well over a billion dollars in her lifetime but was never a billionaire due to her extensive philanthropy. She consistently gave away massive portions of her wealth throughout her life.
Dolly funded the Imagination Library, sent musical instruments and uniforms to band departments in schools throughout the South, helped fund COVID vaccine research, and donated millions to natural disasters.
She was a constant LGBT supporter, and she believed that black lives mattered. She supported the trans population. She just loved everyone and she made sure we knew it.
She was a Christian. Instead of using her Christianity to judge, she used it as Jesus did, to love her neighbor. She didn’t hoard her money; she used it to help people wherever and whenever she could. That’s why there’s such an outpouring of love.
Be like Dolly.

Dolly Parton was a national treasure! I’d never seen this before. Never knew she was on 106th & Park! So good. Dolly was one of one. A queen.
From country to R&B, Dolly Parton’s songwriting touched generations of Black artists. ✍🏾
Her songs crossed genres, generations and cultures including inspiring and being recorded by some of the biggest names in Black music.
Revisiting this 106 & Park moment and celebrating a true music legend. Rest in peace, Dolly Parton. #BETRemembers #106andPark #DollyParton
