This plane has four propellers and five engines. The fifth one is a small turboshaft of about 1,364 hp that never turns a propeller. It runs a compressor that blows air over the flaps, a trick called boundary layer control. It keeps the airflow stuck to the wing at flap angles where an ordinary wing would stall, so a big amphibian can fly as slowly as about 90 km/h. That slow speed is the whole point. Waves don't flatten out for you, and the slower you touch down, the gentler the hit. ShinMaywa says the US-2 can land in waves up to 3 meters. Then there's the spray. Watch the clip the hull has a spray suppressor that pushes water down and spray strips that throw it sideways, so it stays out of the engines. A flying boat has to solve the water as well as the air. People consistently highlight clips of helluva boss when its being raunchier but i find it funny how the hatedom fails to ever talk about a grand majority of times when its simply pretty wholesome and fun. Like how do you not smile at a sequence like this. #HelluvaBoss

In 1940, British fighter pilots began noticing something deeply frightening about their aircraft. Push a Spitfire or Hurricane into a sharp dive, and the engine could suddenly splutter, lose its strength, or stop altogether. German pilots already understood the advantage. Their fuel-injected Messerschmitt Bf 109s could dive aggressively without suffering the same problem. British Merlin engines relied on carburetors, and when the aircraft experienced negative G forces, fuel rushed through the carburetor in the wrong way, leaving the engine without the mixture it needed. In a fight for your life, even a few seconds could mean everything. Then Beatrice Shilling stepped in. Shilling was an aeronautical engineer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, but she was far from the quiet, conventional engineer people might have expected. Before the war, she raced motorcycles at Brooklands, one of Britain’s most dangerous racing circuits. She became one of the few women to earn its prestigious Gold Star after completing a lap at more than 100 mph. She knew machines. Rather than attempting to rebuild the entire carburetor, Shilling found a remarkably simple answer: a tiny metal restrictor placed in the fuel system to control the sudden rush of fuel during negative-G maneuvers. From 1941 onward, Shilling and a small team traveled from RAF station to RAF station, fitting the modification directly onto fighter aircraft. The pilots soon gave the little device a nickname that would follow it into history. “Miss Shilling’s orifice.” It was not a perfect solution. Later carburetor technology eventually dealt with the problem more completely. But that little piece of metal gave RAF pilots something precious when they needed it most: an engine that was far less likely to betray them during combat, without having to wait for an entirely new engine design. And perhaps the best part of the story is the woman behind it. Before Beatrice Shilling helped keep British fighters alive in the sky, she had already been spending her weekends pushing motorcycle engines beyond 100 miles per hour on a dangerous racing circuit. When war placed a dangerous engine problem in front of her, she did what she knew best. She understood the machine.

🚨 SUMMARY: What we know so far about the RAF Fairford suspected bomb plot - A farmer driving home in the early hours found three white vans blocking a village road with no one inside - Suspicious, she immediately turned around before seeing a "group of Middle Eastern-looking young guys run off through the trees" in the direction of the air base wearing masks - One van displayed a UK number for a company called "Fuel 2You", which is not registered on Companies House. The number also appeared to be one digit short and does not ring when called - She immediately called 999 and five men were arrested within 25 minutes under the Explosives Act. Homes were evacuated and a major incident was declared just after 8am - Later today, the two rear doors of two of the vans were open and large black containers could be seen scattered around with a bomb disposal robot operating next to the vans - The five suspects were then further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act - Counter Terror Police are understood to think that a suspected bomb plot linked to Iran is the most likely scenario due to US air bombers operating from the base - Last night, before the incident, reports said that the base was at its highest alert with tractors blocking all gates. A local in the village said they had been stopped at gunpoint at a roadblock by a group of American soldiers, who ordered them to put their hands out of the car and identify themselves - Donald Trump claims the US had been investigating the five suspects and had them "under view for a long time"
