Of the 97% of S&P 500 companies that have reported their Q2 results so far, the average earnings growth rate has been 52%, according to FactSet. Wall Street had only expected 23.1% growth as of June 30. If the 52% rate holds, it will be the strongest since the 91.6% surge in Q2 2021, a period marked by the post-COVID reopening. Meanwhile, the forward P/E ratio for the index sits at 19.6x, below the five-year average of 19.9x but higher than the 10-year average of 19x. In other words, there isn’t a bubble in the stock market. $SPY

Here’s why the stock market is down today: -Treasury yields continue to rise. With higher yields, the opportunity cost of holding stocks goes up. Higher yields = bonds are more attractive relative to stocks since the return investors can earn from lower-risk assets goes up. -Rate hike expectations are up as well. The odds of a 25 bps rate hike next month rose to 66.2% compared to 65.4% yesterday and 39.6% a week ago. Higher rates increase borrowing costs for companies and reduce the present value of future earnings. -The U.S. launched a new attack on IRGC forces in Iran, sending Brent crude oil up 5%. Higher oil prices increase the risk of inflation, which also boosts rate hike odds and Treasury yields. $SPY $QQQ
