President @BillClinton recorded a video for @ceskyrozhlas in which he plays “Happy Birthday To You” on the saxophone for Václav Havel on the day of what would have been his 90th birthday.
It is his personal tribute to a dear friend, a beloved politician, and—as Prague Reduta jazz club can attest—also a former musical partner.
The saxophone has long been part of President Clinton’s story. During his visit to Prague, Václav Havel gave him a saxophone at Reduta, on which President Clinton then played “Summertime” and “My Funny Valentine.” Václav Havel accompanied him on the tambourine.
That night was exceptional for many reasons, and as Bill Clinton says in an interview with @Radiozurnal1, it is one he will always remember. Playing together with Václav Havel in Prague showed that music can bring a personal dimension to diplomacy.
Now, having celebrated his own 80th birthday in August, President Clinton is adding another musical moment to that story: a few notes honoring a friendship and the shared hopes that brought him and President Havel together.
His message, sent skyward: "Happy birthday, friend."
