they told us in math class in the early 2000s that we wouldn’t have a calculator with us always and 20 years later my friends argue whether or not my pocket phone contains a conscious machine god

Unfinished coding side projects are now way easier to complete than unfinished blog posts. I’m perfectly OK with AI writing my code, even the docs. But I flinch at the idea of AI writing my blog posts, which feels like an egregious violation of a fundamental ethnical contract.

if you’re a software engineer you should pivot to being a navigator of complexity

Okay, so matrix multiplication on silicon isn’t thinking, but the flow of sodium ions through protein channels embedded in a lipid bilayer is? Why do materialists turn to animist reasoning when the substrate is carbon-based instead of silicon?

claude: the two versions of the code compile to identical binaries, let me benchmark them to make sure they have the same performance ??? claude apparently believes in dualism and must check the binary's immaterial soul

I no longer see any compelling reason to believe that taste is some permanent boundary LLMs won’t cross. It’s already happening.

I feel so bad for Anthropic's botched PR. Opus 5.5 is simply amazing. Blazingly fast, one-shots animations in a way that I feel like a film director. I can generate 5-10 animations for a scene just to narrow down what I want, then nail the best combo. In the meantime, they're pulling PR stunts, bribing the clerics, and scaring my momma. What an unnecessary tragedy, when the product sells itself.

This is a friendly reminder that unless you are "lab" and you and your team enjoy INFINITE TOKENS to commit at scale never seen before, you should not be building your own git replacement, neither using it.

This semester I am teaching a new course on Agentic Systems, which explores the full stack of AI systems: from building and optimizing agent harnesses to serving and optimizing LLM serving infrastructure. Students learn by building, measuring, and optimizing real agents and systems, balancing capability, latency, and cost. Our goal is not just to teach today's AI technologies, but to prepare students to build tomorrow's. All lectures, readings, and assignments are publicly available at cs2680.seas.harvard.edu

What Tao should do right now instead of slide decks? Use AI and his skills to make the AI results understandable. Never bet against technology.

working at a higher level of abstraction has always required understanding the lower level ones, I don't think coding agents changes this

It was almost impossible for a programmer who wrote all their code by hand to divorce their ego from the output. Now agents are delivering what decades of agile admonishing about “collective ownership” never could. What a gift!

the "Hard Problem" in a nutshell: 1. atoms aren't conscious 2. humans are made of atoms 3. humans are conscious 4. so at least one of 1-3 must be false Panpsychists say #1 is false Dualists say #2 is false Illusionists say #3 is false Materialists say #4 is false
