The young staffer you barely acknowledge may someday be making hiring decisions. Treat people well because it’s the right thing to do. It also happens to be really good career advice.

Some of the most important opportunities in a coach’s career begin with conversations they’ll never know occurred. Search firms. Athletic directors. Administrators. Industry decision-makers. An experienced agent isn’t just someone you call when you need a contract negotiated. They should be building relationships and advocating for you long before an opportunity exists.

One underrated benefit of experienced representation: You don’t always have to be the person asking. More money. Better terms. Additional resources. Contract changes. An extension. A good agent knows when to push, what to push for, and when preserving your relationship with the administration matters more than winning a particular point.

Contract advice for head coaches: Don’t negotiate against yourself because you’re excited about the opportunity. You can be grateful for the job AND advocate for your value. You can want the job AND ask for protection. You can trust the administration AND insist the agreement reflects that trust. Those things aren’t mutually exclusive.

An experienced agent has been through that moment many times before, and can focus on the details, protections, and long-term implications while you focus on the opportunity.

Coaches: Don't confuse being known with being respected. Social media can create visibility. Your work creates credibility. Win. Develop people. Build relationships. Treat people well. Do what you say you're going to do. Build a reputation that gets stronger when you're not in the room.

Coaches often focus on what the school owes them if they’re fired. Don’t overlook what YOU owe if you leave. A restrictive buyout can limit your ability to pursue the very opportunity your success created. Every head coach should understand both sides of the termination provisions before signing.

A good agent shouldn’t just help you get your next job. They should help you build a career. Which opportunities make sense? When should you stay? When should you listen? What should your contract look like? How will today’s decision affect tomorrow’s opportunities? Experience matters because the best career advice isn’t always about making the next move. Sometimes it’s knowing when not to.

It's not who you know, it's who knows you. “What are they really like?” “Would you hire them again?” “How do they treat people?” “Can they actually lead? You can prepare for an interview in a week. You're building your references for years.

It’s difficult to know your true market value when you negotiate a contract every few years. What are comparable coaches earning? What protections are becoming standard? What are schools actually agreeing to? Where is there room to push? An experienced agent who works extensively in your profession has the benefit of seeing hundreds of contracts and negotiations over a career. That perspective matters. Don't leave money on the table.

For coaches pursuing their first head coaching opportunity: Don’t just ask, “Can I get this job?” Ask: Can I win there? Can I recruit there? Will the administration support the program? Are expectations aligned with resources? Can I build something sustainable? Getting the wrong head coaching job can be far more costly than waiting for the right one.

Head coaches: The biggest number in your contract isn’t always the most important one. A $2 million contract with weak termination protection can be worth far less than a $1.5 million contract with strong guarantees. Salary gets the headline. Protection determines what the contract is actually worth.

Assistant coaches who want to become head coaches: Don’t spend so much time trying to look like a head coach that you stop being a great assistant. Master your current job. Make your head coach better. Make your coworkers better. Develop players. Build relationships. Take ownership. Learn everything you can.
