In 2024, 16,499 people received MAID. That was 5.1% of deaths in this country. Since 2016 the total is 76,475. Another 4,017 people who requested it died of something else before it was provided. Call it free if you want. The bill still arrives. Fraser Institute, 2025: the median wait from a family doctor’s referral to treatment is 28.6 weeks. That is 15.3 weeks just to see the specialist, then 13.3 more for the treatment. In 1993 that whole wait was 9.3 weeks. It is more than three times longer. 1,386,286 Canadians were already waiting for treatment after they had seen a specialist. Neurosurgery sits at 49.9 weeks. Orthopaedic surgery at 48.6. New Brunswick’s total wait is 60.9 weeks. Ontario is the short one, and short is still 19.2. SecondStreet’s partial count for 2024-25, missing Alberta and parts of Manitoba, still found at least 23,746 people who died while waiting for surgery or a diagnostic scan. So the question is not whether the pamphlet exists. The question is what a system is doing when the queue is longer than the illness. You do not need a conspiracy to explain why someone deteriorates, gets told to get their affairs in order, and takes the door that is open. You need a calendar. Free is not the same as available. A specialist you cannot see is not care. A scan in month ten is not a plan. And a country that can process a death faster than a hip is not the model anyone should be copying. #cdnpoli
