This story is a credit to @D_Bo20 and the Robinson Family. They want to tell you about Eli. They're hoping it helps others. It's worth remembering: “Maybe we can all be a little less certain about knowing what someone is going through." nytimes.com/athletic/7617243…

Some Medicare for All takes from me and @dr_kkjetelina as it regains steam: —Can we afford it? —Would it look like Medicare? —How would it manage costs? —Could it save independent medicine? —What about the "rationing" question? —Could it help address social drivers of health?

This is 100% because of @DGlaucomflecken
Big news—Congress has introduced a ban on corporate-owned medical practices, modeled after Oregon’s new law & our lawsuit protecting independent physicians. Thread explaining the bill and how it’s part of the drafters’ broader efforts to rein in corporate medicine. 1/x

But if states have CPOM bans, how have corporations taken over so many practices? Enter the "friendly physician" workaround. The corporation takes control of the medical practice through an “MSO”—a separate corporate entity traditionally meant to provide back-office admin.

And they've supported other measures: —Site-neutral payment —Breaking up PBMs to support small pharmacies —Stronger antitrust —Increasing primary care pay —Expanding health centers —Ending subsidies for MA insurers that buy up practices —Ending red tape in Medicare

Bottom line: The corporatization of U.S. health care is a policy choice. Good to see some legislators in DC leading the way with concrete solutions—and trying to imagine something different.

The first provision of the Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act would apply this CPOM ban to all states. In short, traditional for-profit corporations—like private equity investors and insurance companies—may not own medical practices.

In most states today, it is actually illegal for traditional corporations to own medical practices. For-profit clinics must be owned by licensed physicians. Such "corporate practice of medicine" (CPOM) laws stem from concerns that corporations will put profits over patients.

Big vote today in the WakeMed-Atrium hospital merger. The County will decide whether to approve the transfer for what appears to be little, if anything, in exchange. Our updated public comment, based on new terms released Friday & a separate deal announced by Gov Stein Sunday.
