Is AI's rise a constitutional moment for governance? Paul Dragos Aligica with @HayekProgram and @mercatus argues classical liberals must help design AI's rules, not just react to them, drawing on Buchanan and Ostrom's constitutional political economy. buff.ly/1ALprvs

Grateful to the great @ccoyne1 for kicking off our @tfas Austrian Economics Seminar this weekend. One theme of his talk was the marvel of the market as a process for peaceful cooperation and creative problem solving 🎉💡

Hayek wrote across economics, political philosophy, social theory, and more. What ties it all together?
In Friedrich Hayek: A Very Short Introduction, @PeterBoettke, director of the F. A. @HayekProgram at Mercatus, and M. Scott King offer a unifying idea: how social coordination is possible without central command.

There was a recent post correctly pointing to Menger's revolutionary contribution to economics science. In 2022 I published a paper in the European Journal of History of Economic Thought discussing Menger and his continuing relevance.

I am fascinated by the inability of people to process the actual argument about market theory and the price system that Mises/Hayek/Kirzner/Lavoie were making and why the fundamental problem with socialism is neither an incentive issue nor a computational complexity argument. Of course, socialism must face those two problems, but the deeper problem is one of the generation of the knowledge in the first place, and the contextual nature of that knowledge. Remove the context, the knowledge isn't difficult to process, IT IS NOT THERE. As Buchanan once tried to convey -- the market order is defined in the process of its emergence, and this is an open ended and creative process. Mechanism design theory never had an answer to this, and still does not.
It is for this reason that i fundamentally do not understand leftist hostility to AI: it is the only currently plausible mechanism by which the classical Marxist objective of a wealthy industrial society based on a non-market economy could, potentially, be achieved.

Year 3, Day 1 @HayekProgram 🎉
Here’s to another year of learning and continuing the liberal tradition — and the first year of teaching! All under the supervision of Mises, of course.

Ryan's right that liberals should defend principles of liberty & equality, not just efficiency.
My @HayekProgram do this well. See @PeterBoettke's The Struggle for a Better World, @NovakMikayla's Liberal Emancipation & Freedom in Contention, @ccoyne1's In Search of Monsters.

Yes, I did write this with Prof Heilbroner, I was at NYU at the time, and I guess by the time it appeared I had moved to GMU. Prof Heilbroner was a wonderful man, though we had big differences. If I understand this entries history it was first written by Galbraith.

The SEP entry on Hayek was written by David Schmidtz originally and then Dave asked me to join him in subsequent revisions over the past decade. I am glad this is part of SEP. I hope readers might want to explore my 2018 book on Hayek (if interested write me at my gmu email). I also hope it might create enough interest that readers will be alert to the Oxford VSI I wrote with Scott King which will be published in 2027.

My chapter on future of liberalism highlights the liberal aspiration for a permanent peace. What might be the institutional configuration to deliver on Kant’s aspirations of (a) strangers nowhere in this world, and (b) a permanent peace.
