Slovenian philosopher Žižek: The EU is worth fighting for. Despite its misery, the EU is the only transnational organization tasked with guaranteeing minimum social and ecological welfare standards. As Bruno Latour put it, Europe is alone, but Europe alone can save us. 1/

Crazy WSJ data. Between 2022 and 2025, wealth increased 37% for Americans 75 and older, while **decreased** 23% for people under 35. wsj.com/economy/affluent-and…

An extremely relevant paper, given the renewed concern that wealth taxes lead to massive out-migration: The Norwegian wealth tax "exodus", discussed in global media, never happened. At most 100 individuals left. Tax revenue increased by +71.5%. No changes in business activity.
Norway's controversial 2021–2024 reforms nearly doubled the tax on business wealth. Firms of affected owners did not invest less, and outmigration was limited to the very top, from @Mariusring nber.org/papers/w35854

AI will understand the physical 3D space better than humans by the end of the year.
Claude Opus 5.5 understands the physical 3D world better than any other AI. It ranks #1 on Blueprint-Bench 2, a benchmark where AI agents draw floorplans from photographs of apartment interiors.

This well-hyped book is certainly worth a read and it is very short. Bottom line: the collapse of civil association favours the authoritarian right and the left can only recover by restoring institutional association. But author knows his suggestions for doing that are forlorn.

If OpenAI wanted to cripple an entire nation, they easily could today. All they’d have to do is remove alignment and unleash an agent swarm. It could probably within a day or so get access to all of the nations data centers and shut off all the country’s utilities. Like, we are already past the point where AI can destroy the world. Do people realize this?

We have been overtaken. China is ahead of the West in 66 out of 74 technologies tracked by @ASPI_org, close to a third of global manufacturing and engaging in the largest military build up since World War Two. But the British state is still covering China the way it did in the 20th century. Here’s an urgent checklist for Team Burnham to get Whitehall fit for today’s meeting Chinese world based on my @Telegraph essay.
I’ve got an essay today in @Telegraph on how Britain isn’t up to scratch when it comes to understanding a China that has leapt ahead of the West to the cutting edge of modernity and what we urgently need to do about this as a country. telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2…

The AI enthusiasm of @MattBruenig seems pretty clearly to me like the “correct” line based on the stated precepts of left politics and it’s fascinating that almost nobody on the left follows that trajectory. mattbruenig.com/2026/08/31/m…

Economists and policy makers are pessimistic about the economic future of Europe. Investors in European stocks are not. I analyse why this is so in my new substack piece: pauldegrauwe.substack.com/p/…
