Colleagues from Cefas are currently in Indonesia as part of a new project with @TERANGI_ aimed at supporting the sustainable international trade of coral and coral reef conservation. @Haydenclose @IslaMacMillan We'll be sharing more from this project soon!

Incredible visit to the marine conservation site @YayasanLINI looking at the links between #coral farmers and #restoration projects. Thank you 🙏🏼 for your hospitality and sharing your expertise. Phenomenal 🪸 @TERANGI_ @CefasGovUK

@CefasGovUK #FutureOcean21 panel talking about what it's like to work onboard a research vessel. Come rain or shine, come fish or water, or worms or mud. For me: amazing, wet, real, SCIENCE, 🤢 @dictioca @Haydenclose @S_Ware5

Fish have to navigate many hurdles in their journey from plankton to adults before reaching our plates, from finding food to avoiding predators. The fish eggs & larvae analysed in Cefas’ plankton laboratory help us understand future fish populations #WorldFisheriesDay @DefraGovUK

Size doesn’t always matter. Plankton size & abundance affect Small Pelagic Fish biomass, distribution & growth. Which is why #PelticSurvey studies plankton communities with traditional & new methods: microscopy, flow cytometry, Zooscan, Plankton Imager @CefasGovUK @SophiePitois

We've been watching this grow in warm sunny conditions, believe it's now the largest ever coccolithophore bloom in the Channel. Enhanced ocean colour (19-25 Jun, stretches blue-green) shows billions of bright chalky plates released from cells, harmless. #Sentinel3

Horrific plastic pollution of the marine food chain in my plankton sample. Fish like herrings and sardines that feed upon plankton now have microplastics in their food and so will the animals that eat them such as dolphins, seals, polar bears and seabirds. @zeiss_micro

#PelticSurvey has been developing a 6-year unique timeseries of sardine biomass in a little studied area. Data from all life stages, from eggs and larvae to adults, are collected to support sustainable management of this resource. @CefasGovUK @ICES_ASC @gus

Manta chain part 1: When plankton is abundant, #mantas often form a feeding chain. Swimming in line, head to tail, each manta positions itself slightly higher than the ray in front, so they can each catch plankton that has jumped upwards to escape the path of the manta in front.

Seasons happen in the sea just like on land. Off Plymouth, UK, the autumn plankton has begun, signalled by a diatom bloom of Coscinodiscus spp. @zeiss_micro

Remarkable life story. Many seashore animals start life in the plankton. They look very different to the adult they become, like this long-clawed porcelain crab larva #BluePlanet2 @BBCEarth

A wake up call. Plastic kills the plankton at the base of the marine food chain. A blue microfibre blocks the gut of a predatory arrow worm. #BluePlanet2 @BBCEarth

A little horror. A tiny, transparent 2 mm plastic shard in the plankton shows how our rubbish ends up at the base of the marine food chain.
