What: University of Iowa reneges on guarantees of graduate worker funding, haphazardly communicating changes to contracts Description: The University of Iowa recently issued a statement to Directors of Graduate Studies indicating the university is rescinding contracts to all graduate students guaranteeing their meager stipend. Instead, the university advised that funding for graduate students, current and recently accepted, will include disclaimers in updated contracts that funding is dependent on availability and not guaranteed. While the university claims this “is not a sign that employment contracts are not being honored,” it is hard to see how this isn’t a breach of contract.
