DigiByte: The Groestl $DGB Mining Incident and the v9.26.2 Fix
A plain-language explainer for the DigiByte community, miners, pools, and exchanges:
Someone used AI to analyze DigiByte's consensus code and discovered they could still mine blocks with Groestl — one of DigiByte's old, retired mining algorithms — because of a safety check that went missing during the v8 code rebase in 2021/2022.
DigiByte is supposed to run 5 mining algorithms. Starting 2026-06-28 at 16:40:05 UTC (block 23,751,096), it was effectively running a 6th (Groestl) that was retired back in 2019 and should no longer be accepted.
This did not steal anyone's coins and did not reverse confirmed transactions.
But it destabilized the network and caused it to split: some software accepted the Groestl blocks and some rejected them, so different nodes and explorers ended up on different versions of the chain.
The fix is v9.26.2. It permanently stops new Groestl (and any other retired/unknown algorithm) blocks, while keeping existing chain history intact so nobody's transactions are reversed. Everyone needs to upgrade to v9.26.2 for the network to heal back into
one chain.

• RH-30b: Address validation hardened with full base58check (prefix-only check was bypassable)
🟠 HIGH
• RH-25a: MuSig2 bundle fields (version, aggregate_sig, bitmap) no longer dropped on P2P round-trip
• RH-38: Zero-amount mint bypass, DD supply cap mismatch, and unvalidated OP_RETURN data — all closed
• RH-49: Dynamic OP_RETURN finder replaces hardcoded vout[2] index
🟡 MEDIUM
• RH-03: P2P rate limiting (600 msg/hr), oracle ID range checks, epoch validation, memory cap on MuSig2 messages
• RH-08: Plaintext DD private keys now erased from memory after wallet encryption
• RH-24: Schnorr signatures now required on MuSig2 P2P messages to prevent spoofing
• RH-26c: Out-of-range transaction type enum that could crash the node — fixed
• RH-36a: TOCTOU race in DCA cache after node restart — fixed
• RH-36b: Health values clamped to [0, 30000] to prevent integer overflow in DCA calculations
• RH-36c: Invalid DD transactions now rejected early before expensive oracle/DB lookups (DoS mitigation)
• RH-25b: Stale oracle prices properly reverted after chain reorganizations

• 402 new adversarial security tests across 52 test files
• MuSig2 sub-suite merging and bench sanity check fixes
• 16 JSON test fixtures updated from Bitcoin → DigiByte addresses
• 8 functional tests updated for RC29 compatibility
