How the process of discovering cyberattacks biases our understanding of cybersecurity

Geoblocking happens across media platforms like Spotify, communications channels like Zoom, Webex, or Mailchimp, or basic digital utilities like winzip and unity. Part of what I loved about the project was the combination of political science and computer engineering.
In the paper, we discuss firm de-risking, sanctions, and avenues to reduce risk. It’s published at the top CS conference, but it’s readable for a political scientist or policy expert. It starts a conversation about risk in the digital economy usenix.org/system/files/usen…
Most evidence was anecdotal - our study is the first comprehensive study of geoblocking in sanctioned states. We find widespread blocking, even by free and open platforms that don’t require accounts.
Very proud to announce our paper “Digital Discrimination of Users in Sanctioned States: The Case of the Cuba Embargo” from @USENIXSecurity with @AnnaAblove, @royaensafi and her team at Michigan was given a Distinguished Paper Award. Thread.
Does anyone have the full APSA schedule in PDF form? My university wants it for my travel authorization, but I can't find it anywhere.

How big are the digital exports of the U.S. compared to Europe?
Today, trade flows not only through container ports, but through routers. In this new @NatureComms paper, we introduce a method to estimate trade in digital products by combining machine learning methods with corporate revenue data.
There is a lot to unpack, so let’s dive in! /1

Harry Oppenheimer notes the under reporting of cyber events, particularly in the Five Eyes cases providing important cautionary notes for those studying restraint or persistent engagement. He also cleans up the CFR data for use on the US case.

Our recent JPR is part of a special issue organized by @DaphnaCanetti and Ryan Shandler entitled "Moving from Speculation to Investigation." Its really nice to see the field moving away from gross conjecture towards maturity. Summary of the project.
