Did people actually play these games? A pretty big point about the RC outbreak is that it took place over months, and nobody outside found out because of how oppressive Umbrella's information war was. How do you do that when people have smartphones and internet
One thing that's odd about people's anger at the film's contemporary setting is that it implies RE2 was set in 1998 as some kind of enlightened period decision, and not that it happened to be released in 1998.

Everyone saying “Resident Evil has always had goofy humor” must really have only looked at Leon highlight reels because even in his case, everything is done with a sincere and played straight energy. The series has not gone out of its way to make the joke in a ironic “well, that just happened” way, it creates situations that you would riff to on your own to make the joke yourself. The absurdity and humor comes from the situation you’re in, not an actual joke the game is telling you. Them going out of their way to make the joke directly just feels like a flanderization that comes from a shallow understanding of the series’ humor.
I feel the most fitting way to describe the new #ResidentEvil movie is what would happen if Buster Keaton made a horror movie. Zach Cregger nails that mix of comedy with thrills.

So here's something to think about when it comes to video games being adapted into live action and this new Resident Evil movie from Zach Cregger. All of these films (and Assassin's Fist being a series but its the same runtime as a film) are still staring characters you want to see or at least have a connection to the source material. Liberties can be taken. Sonic The Hedgehog 3: Adapts the story of Sonic Adventure 2, takes liberties and changes up things (now, personally, I wasn't a fan of some choices) but the film overall captures what we love about the characters and had throwbacks put in at the right time. Street Fighter Assassin's Fist: Generally all we really know about Ryu & Ken's early life was that they trained under Gouken for years until they left to travel the world which led into the events of Street Fighter & Street Fighter Alpha. So, the guys behind Assassin's Fist, who are massive fans of the series, gave us the early years before the world warrior tournament. Ryu & Ken training, learning from their master, learning about Ansatsuken and their masters past as well as actually getting flashbacks to Gouken & Gouki and what caused their split and what became of Gouki. They took liberties here, but never stepped away from what was important. Mortal Kombat: ok like....do I even need to explain this one? By the time this film got made, 2 games already came out with the third one being worked on probably alonside the film being made as it released in April 1995 and the film released in August 1995. They gave us a tournament, characters who came pretty close to their game counterparts, the world of the games fit well into the film, and it had cool martial arts fights, it didn't try to be something it wasn't. Silent Hill: Ok so....maybe not the best, but you gotta understand, around the time this film came out, video games that became movies generally did horrible. But this one tried, and for what it was, it was decent. Now, if you wanna adapt RE and have it during the outbreak of Raccoon City, ok, cool, the Bryan character works, but how about on his run through the city he actually goes to familiar places from the games? Now, he doesn't have to meet any of the main characters, but let's say he gets inside the RPD and he's met with Marvin and a bunch of the survivors in the main hall, the RPD's heavily overrun in other areas, and there's apparently an evacuation being planned at the clocktower. Take a scene from outbreak where Rita goes to get the truck to take people to safety, but the zombies start breaking in and Marvin gets bit trying to defend Bryan. See, RE fans really aren't asking a 1:1, but much like about what I posted above and what made the other films work, that's what fans are asking for. Not just easter eggs to dangle in front of us, but a connection. You can take liberities in your creation but when you go off the trail and you give people something that really doesn't feel like what it's supposed to be, you can't be mad at people for being a bit upset. I know a lot of people aren't going to read this, or all of it, so I expect angry comments, just understand that most fans are even saying Cregger's film will probably end up being good, its just not a good Resident Evil film.

First Impressions Resident Evil movie review: - its like a bunch of horror shooter qte & cutscene pov compilations : the movie - it visually and aesthetically feels like the remakes a lot of times, particularly imo re 7. color grading is nice though - its as dark as re 7 sometimes, and has the same sense of humor that kinda doesn’t really land…? 🧍‍♀️ - without spoilers there is a line that is about at the level of mcu humor that is just 🗿 - i am very resident evil brained so i see the references if i try, but otherwise i dont know if a normal person who watches this will understand what kind of universe RE really is - what lore elements are used are just names without context. not even the branding? i expected that much but literally they might as well have slapped the name ‘leon’ on a random cop - sound design is really really good and is the strongest part esp the first half… the long periods of silence are overdone sometimes - i feel like i can’t praise the shots even if they were good because they kinda just look like a cut and paste of many game povs, from the zoom, panning, to the visual guidance - overall right now my initial impression is. so vague. i don’t exactly hate it but it is leaning towards ‘OK horror but not really resident evil’. i guess to a normal person this would be entertaining / cool like a theme park ride and that’s it - it feels like a recontextualized shell, i really want to like it but… eh - the sad part is i feel like it would have worked if they didn’t try to lean so hard into “omg look video game mechanic!!!” why am i watching cutscenes - this doesn’t make sense without context/spoilers but, william birkin

.Captures the "atmosphere" .Not an adaptation .Fast paced from the start (1h30 movie mind you) .no actual following of the actual story that film is supposed to adapt ."easter eggs" and "references" (key jingling) .Just a feeling of resident evil Should have brought my bingo
🧟‍♂️ Main highlights from the first reviews of Zach Cregger’s ‘RESIDENT EVIL’ movie: ▪︎ Captures the atmosphere and feel of the games ▪︎ Not a 1:1 adaptation of any of the games ▪︎ Lots of blood, gore, violence, and horror ▪︎ Fast-paced almost from the start ▪︎ Unusual monsters similar to the creatures from the horror movie "The Thing" ▪︎ Creative creature designs ▪︎ Good, tense soundtrack ▪︎ No familiar characters or stories from the games ▪︎ Horror mixed with dark humor ▪︎ Austin Abrams does a good job in the lead role ▪︎ Plenty of Easter eggs and references to the games ▪︎ Limited ammo and counting bullets ▪︎ Some moments feel like you’re playing Resident Evil ▪︎ Good scares and tense moments ▪︎ The T-virus has some new effects ▪︎ A strange and unusual ending ▪︎ Very close to the leaked script ▪︎ Called Zach Cregger’s best movie yet ▪︎ Also described as one of the best horror movies of the year ▪︎ Several viewers consider it one of the best video game adaptations ‼️ The main complaints so far are too much humor and a weaker final third.
