Super tough day against Uzbekistan. Indian Open team’s first loss in any team event since 2022.
Starting from the 2024 Olympiad, we’ve had a ritual of picking our Player of the Day. Yesterday, it was unanimous: Nihal.
The message was: Whilst results do matter, the effort and process matter more. Results don’t always convey the full story. It doesn’t show the attitude behind.
Nihal played his heart and soul out. He could have played it safe, stayed solid, and likely, blameless. But he went for it from the word go, despite having Black. It was only because of his incredible fight that the team got into its best chance to beat Uzbekistan after 4 draws between the two powerhouse teams.
Every great result, including our 2024 Olympiad win came on the back of years of preparation coupled with earlier struggles and setbacks. Our result yesterday was a similar stepping stone towards some great result in the future.
The result didn’t go our way yesterday. But I am sure Nihal will win us many medals in both the near, and distant future. 🇮🇳❤️
Congratulations to the All India Chess Federation for this fantastic initiative! 👏❤️
For the first time in the history of Indian Chess, quarterly stipends ranging from ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000, totalling ₹42,30,000 for the first quarter of 2025, have been disbursed to 42 top players across the U-7 to U-19 categories (both open and girls), based on their performance in last year’s nationals. This is part of a total outlay of ₹6,15,60,000 under this scheme.
These stipends will support players’ coaching and travel needs, enabling them to compete globally and pursue higher goals with confidence.
Taking inspiration from Aadarniya PM Shri @narendramodi ji’s call to empower athletes at the grassroots, the All India Chess Federation has moved from vision to delivery.
This marks the implementation of a key component of the national chess development blueprint I presented as President of AICF designed to nurture talent and create robust support systems.
Together, we are building the foundation for a new era of Indian chess.

P. Harikrishna is an absolute gem of Indian chess! Apart from being a super strong chess player, he is the man who has been part of the team of both the current classical world champions - D. Gukesh and Ju Wenjun.
Hari has been an absolute team player. Apart from winning the Olympiad Gold in Budapest in 2024, he has been part of the winning team of just about every major team event in the world. This just speaks volumes about Hari's team spirit.
Speaking to ChessBase India Rajinikanth, Gukesh's father, said, "Gukesh and Hari worked together for a week in 2022 and then Gukesh kept up his upward trajectory by winning the Gijon Open, crossing 2700 Elo in Biel and then the Chennai Olympiad 2022 performance where he won the individual gold and team bronze. Hari was kind enough to invite Gukesh to his home after he crossed 2650. He had mentioned that he was impressed with Gukesh's game. I believe that 1 week of intense camp at Hari's place played a big role in Gukesh's growth back then. He then helped him at the Candidates and also for the World Championship Match and I am very thankful for his efforts and guidance"
In the pictures you can see Gukesh playing with Hari's daughter - cute little Maya! A huge shoutout for Hari for doing what he is doing for Indian and world chess!
