Fantastic decision by DHS! Heritage has been calling for this loophole to be closed since 2024. The visa exemption was billed as an effort to incentivize economic activity but was, of course, exploited by our adversaries to fraudulently obtain American citizenship.
BREAKING: DHS announces via federal register that Secretary Mullin is closing a Biden-era loophole that allowed Chinese nationals to travel to the Northern Mariana Islands without a visa for 14 days, which four GOP Senators alleged was facilitating Chinese birth tourism. Senators @SenMikeLee, @votetimscott, @SenBillCassidy, & @JohnCornyn had written a letter to Mullin in April, urging him to close the loophole, which Mullin has now done.
Via the notice:
“The Secretary has broad authority to suspend the program for good cause,
including threats to national security, law enforcement interests, and immigration enforcement. The Secretary has determined that there is good cause to suspend EVS-
TAP, while DHS, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Interior, evaluates the program.”

Another recent example of malign Chinese activity in the Pacific, specifically in Fiji. Chinese “friendship” isn’t what it seems, and I’m glad to see the U.S. provide information and technical recommendations to Fiji in response. That’s what real friendship looks like.
The Embassy recently informed the Government of Fiji and a regional organization based in Suva that the United States has identified a suspected compromise of this organization’s network between July and August 2026. Hackers with links to China maintained access to the organization's network over several days. The Embassy also provided technical recommendations on next steps Fiji and the impacted entity could take to protect their networks.

🌐 In the Pacific Islands region, the United States continues to observe state-sponsored cyber threat actors linked to China targeting foreign governments, multilateral organizations, and telecommunications networks.
This malicious cyber activity aligns with overall U.S. government observations that China remains an active and persistent cyber threat. Data stolen through this activity provides China’s intelligence services and malign actors access to sensitive information that compromises communications between Pacific Island countries and territories.
“Stealing trade secrets and academic research are all part of the Chinese playbook,” he noted. “It is a whole party effort by the CCP to undermine the American way of life and threaten American innovation and dominance.”

An important action taken by @StateDept. Zhao’s actions directly harm shared U.S.-Pacific interests, and no freedom-loving country should tolerate this corruption.
