My neighbor had car electrical troubles and we couldn't jump-start it. I decided to find an electrician who had helped me with my older Corolla earlier this year when it had similar issues.
I got to the shop and the boss told me he was working on a car not far away and he was sending someone to call him. I told him that I would just drive there myself. As I was going I decided to call the boy.
It happened that he had left that boss and was now working on his own. I asked why he left early? He said his boss didn't approve that he bought a bike and was using it for part time work. He also didn't approve of the fact that he left the workshop where he was practically living inside cars and sleeping inside them to go and build a kiosk nearby where he now lived.
This guy is 19, his father had a stroke and his mother left them when he was young. He left school at JSS 2 to start learning how to be an automobile electrician.
Talking to him, I could see that he was intelligent but life had not treated him fairly. He was, however, determined to take control of his fate and was saving money to change his life.
I told him I would continue to help him achieve that in every way that I can. I took him to the place where he lived to get his tools and the road was quite bad. These are the people governance should work for in Africa and not politicians in luxury cars.
This encounter this morning has changed something in me that I can't describe. I will be focusing on how to transform the lives of people like Kwame the 19-year-old automobile electrician because if EVs take hold as I suspect they will, this guy will be jobless and desperate.
I saw an EV charging station at the basement of our neighborhood mall yesterday and that thought hit me. A lot of mechanics and electricians will be jobless soon. They have to be retrained to adapt to the new paradigm.

We can rightfully laugh at Okpebholo and his antics, but my relatives on the ground say crime in Benin has dropped drastically because the government is taking extreme measures against criminals. My guys are even renovating their homes again to go back for Christmas. I am happy these guys were arrested and tried.
Justice Aigbona Momodu has thanked a private citizen whose CCTV footage helped in the arrest of the now-convicted Vegetable Market kidnappers.
The judge urged other citizens to consider installing CCTV cameras in their homes, noting how the footage from the private citizen played a role in the investigation.
He also called on the Edo State Government to install CCTV cameras in public places to strengthen security and assist investigations when crimes occur.
The call comes as the court delivers judgment in the Vegetable Market kidnapping case.
