With the appointment of Berhanu Adelo to lead the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission Abiy’s regime has completed its pretense of appointing independent experts to critical institutions. Those moves were largely aimed at deceiving the West in the first place. Now even that pretence is lifted. Adelo is a recycled cadre who loyally served EPRDF’s repressive regime. His appointment is not an isolated case; one by one, the so-called “independent” leaders of key institutions, including the judiciary and the electoral board, have been replaced. Now, whatever remained of EHRC’s selective independence can finally be put to rest. Say good bye to the buzz word “democratization” under Abiy which was used to appease his Western cheerleaders.

ALERT: We have received multiple reports that 14 Karayyu Gadaa Michile leaders were abducted approximately two weeks ago, and their whereabouts remain unknown. The entire Karayyuu community is in shock and gravely worried for the safety of their leaders, particularly given the brutal execution of 14 previous Gadaa leaders three years ago, by members of Koree Nagegna, a clandestine group operated by the federal and Oromia regional government officials. This latest group of Gadaa Council members was reportedly targeted for refusing to pressure Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) soldiers to surrender. We urgently call on all stakeholders to take immediate and decisive action to pressure the regime to ensure the safety and unconditional release of these Abba Gadaa leaders. The Karayyuu community is still reeling from the execution of its leadership.
