My mom's sick with a "not COVID" (1 negative test) cold, and my brother's family spent the morning in children's hospital ER. Their baby was having trouble breathing, diagnosed with RSV. One uncle is struggling to recover from sepsis and a gut infection, diagnosed with myasthenia gravis earlier this year. Another was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, metastatized to his brain. Meanwhile, I've tested COVID+ for 9.5 months.
This new normal is not normal. Occasionally, flu would make a family ill and they'd stay home. But we're gathering like this and spreading the infections around to vulnerable people, and never have I seen so many different illnesses at once. COVID destroys immune function and public health's failure has warped infection control and our perception of normal.
The poor children will never know that life used to be different.
