Check out this awesome item from @MemorySteelUA. It's a stylish piece of a Russian T-72 tank No 583 destroyed during The Battle for Kyiv in early 2022. What a cool way to support a Ukrainian company. 🛰️ Right now, a Russian satellite is flying in close formation with a Western commercial-ish radar satellite, and makes another close pass in the next ~10 minutes.
COSMOS 2612 has matched orbits with ICEYE-X36, a Finnish-built commercial-ish radar (SAR) satellite. They're circling the planet together under half a kilometer apart, making a close pass almost every orbit (~95 min), the next one around 01:38 UTC (18 Oct), every one at essentially zero relative velocity.
Being upfront: at these separations (sub-km, down to tens of meters), the exact distance is below the precision of public tracking, so treat specific metre figures as indicative. What ISN'T ambiguous is the orbit match and the ~0 m/s closing. This is deliberate, controlled formation flying, the behaviour associated with close-up inspection, not a chance conjunction (collision).
And it's targeted. Cosmos 2612 is the ONLY one of a six-satellite cluster (Cosmos 2609–2614) to have maneuvered: it raised its orbit in the public data ~47 km, drifted into phase with X36, then dropped back to settle alongside it. The other five never moved.

❗️ Uwaga.

As of Friday afternoon, Russia's Cosmos 2612 satellite was roughly three miles from ICEYE-X36, LeoLabs said. A day earlier they were more than 200 miles apart.

🇨🇦 Multiple aircraft appear to be inbound to CFB Wainwright in response to "the incident" (apparent explosion/fire).
The #RCAF CH-146 Griffon helicopters which may be first to respond are too old to have a modern Mode-S/ADS-B transponder; we won't see them.

Here's a closer look at the winds around CFB Wainwright, Alberta over the next 8 hours, and they're strong. The first satellite hotspots were captured about 5 hours ago, and the next data should come in at least 6.5 hours from now. Satellite hotspots and the wind forecast are all on FireMap.

Wildfire near Wainwright, Alberta. Preliminary hotspots are on FireMap now, with strong winds in the forecast. Data is thin until the next good satellite pass in about 8 hours, and FireMap will update as soon as it lands.

Russian military satellite Cosmos 2612 has maneuvered to close in on ICEYE-X36 part of the ICEYE commercial SAR constellation, which supports Ukraine.
Launched from Plesetsk in April 2026, Cosmos 2612 has co-orbited ICEYE-X36 for months in essentially the same plane and altitude (Δi 0.00°, ΔRAAN 0.1°), then in late September raised its orbit, drifted, and dropped back to set up a close pass.
Closest approach today (2026-10-16): 4.5 km at just ~4 m/s.
A matched orbit set up by a deliberate maneuver is classic inspector behavior, not a random flyby.
Data: Space-Track + orbital analysis
The Russian satellite makes its closest pass to the ICEYE satellite high over the Arctic Ocean, north of Canada. The nearest speck of habitation is a Canadian research station CFS Alert ~280 km away; the nearest city (Anchorage) is ~2,700 km.
The red line (Russia’s Cosmos 2612) and the blue line (ICEYE-X36) look like one track because the two satellites are flying almost on top of each other within about 100 metres.
And remember: this is all ~550 km up in space. Nothing is happening on the ground the line just marks the spot directly beneath them.
Data: Space-Track · map: NASA Blue Marble
Why would Russia fly a satellite right next to a radar satellite? The simplest answer: to study it up close.
SAR satellites like ICEYE’s downlink their imagery through polar ground stations. Svalbard (Norway), Inuvik (Canada) and Alaska chief among them. Because these satellites cross the poles on every orbit, they’re talking to those stations almost constantly.
A satellite flying in the exact same orbit is perfectly placed to watch all of it the radar emissions, the downlink timing, the RF signatures, the daily routine. In the trade it’s called pattern-of-life.
You don’t have to touch a satellite to learn a great deal about it. You just have to fly next to it which is exactly what Cosmos 2612 is doing, for now!!
