1980: WHEN LESTER HAYES TOOK OVER THE NFL There have been dominant seasons in NFL history. Quarterbacks have bent the league. Pass rushers have terrorized it. Running backs have carried it. But only once has a cornerback controlled an entire NFL season the way Lester Hayes did in 1980. That year remains one of the most dominant single seasons ever produced by a defensive back - not because of one statistic, but because of how completely he changed the behavior of offenses. Hayes intercepted 13 passes in a 16-game regular season. That number alone commands attention. But it’s what followed that defines dominance. In the postseason he added five more interceptions. He finished the year as NFL Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-Pro, and a Super Bowl Champion. No defensive back before or since has combined league-leading takeaways, postseason control, and a championship run in a single season quite like this. Hayes coverage style was confrontational and suffocating. He disrupted timing at the line, rode receivers through their stems, and attacked the football like it belonged to him. His effectiveness was so overwhelming that the league eventually banned Stickum, because one defender had pushed competitive balance too far. Hayes remained a Pro Bowl level player after the ban. What changed most was the willingness of quarterbacks to challenge him at all. Many corners have been great. Some have been smoother. A few have been longer, faster, or more technically pristine. But none have owned a year the way Lester Hayes owned 1980. That season wasn’t just the best year by a cornerback. It was one of the most dominant seasons by any defensive player in NFL history regardless of position. For one unforgettable year, the most influential player in professional football didn’t touch the ball on offense. He waited for it. And when quarterbacks forgot who he was, he reminded them. 1980 didn’t belong to an offense. It belonged to Lester Hayes. Thank you for reading. If you enjoy this kind of work, please give me a follow. #NFL #Raiders #LesterHayes #History #Football #RaiderNation

Mike Tyson’s response after I told him what happened to his bike tells you exactly what you need to know about Mike Tyson 🤞 Mike always looked out for me since the amateur days. He always knew his things could be replaced, but the people around him couldn’t. That’s just who he is. Check out Andre Ward and I chop it up about Iron Mike on HALL OF GAME over on the ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT YouTube! @ats_fight

One of the greatest live-TV mistakes in sports broadcasting history. It's 2007. ESPN's Rob Stone is doing a pregame spot at New Mexico State's Chile Pepper Institute before Nevada vs. New Mexico State. His host holds up a tiny pepper: "This is the Bhut Jolokia, the world's hottest chili pepper." Stone bites it before the sentence is even finished. Then comes the fine print: "A million Scoville heat units." Stone: "What does that mean?" He finds out fast. The milk doesn't help ("I don't even taste the milk"), and then he asks the question every viewer is asking: "How long is this gonna last?" The answer: "For some people, five, six hours." "Information I could've used a while ago." The sweat, the tears, the pro trying to stay on camera.

Anytime I’m watching a movie or tv show and John Turturro is in it I’m immediately about 300% more interested. One of the greatest actors to ever live, period.

It’s a rotten feeling when throughout school & life you have been near the top in grades, your profession etc. yet know how much less intelligent you are than true geniuses, while also realizing those who have political power probably ate paste in class. Different skills I guess.

What a release day! Proud to have produced all these albums: Twin Temple - “Doomed Lovers” - a dream to make a record that sounds like this. All live instruments, a 37 piece orchestra, a dark fun journey. These guys are so into so much cool music and write such timeless songs. BSC Forever! James Woods & Bob Wayne “The Killer’s Wife” - a wild concept album based on a true story about a once in a lifetime encounter. We get to make such creative records on this project with such great writing! Jess Williamson - “A Mile South of Heaven” - from the moment I met Jess I liked her style and I liked her songs. What a great dream voice! We had a blast making this with such a fun band! Levi Foster - “Appalachian Funk Tree” - Levi came to me with this idea for a blend of lots of styles of music and he executed them so greatly. Such a talented and good guy! Can’t wait to see where his career takes him! And thanks to all the musicians that played on these records! Ted Russell Kamp, Jamie Douglass, John Schreffler, Brian Whelan, Matt Chamberlain, Jay Bellerose, Chris Masterson, Aubrey Richmond, Eleanor Whitmore, Bonnie Whitmore, the Waters of course for their great work on the Woods Wayne project! And Mark Rains and David Spreng who recorded these. And Mark mixed all four!
