The Ottoman Empire was the terror of Europe for centuries. The English, French, Dutch and Scandinavians never really felt this threat at a visceral level. The Spanish, Italians, Austrians, Poles and Hungarians certainly did. Why were the Ottoman Turks so feared, in military terms? Here are some reasons: -Superior numbers. The Ottomans could regularly assemble 100,000 or 200,000 men in the field. -Usually, superiority in cavalry. Nearly always in quantity but sometimes quality too. This included masses of horse archers and light cavalry plus an elite core of heavy armoured cavalry like the Sipahis of the Porte. -Guns. Especially in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Ottomans were a "gunpowder empire". Like the Safavids and Mughals they enthusiastically embraced muskets and cannon. They usually brought substantial firepower to the battlefield, like the "Great Bombards" that levelled the Theodosian Walls at Constantinople. -Janissaries. The elite slave soldiers of the Sultan, harvested from Christian families in the regular "devshirme". They weren't present in every battle but they formed a strategic reserve that could be committed at the right moment to unleash a musket volley and then an assault with maces, scimitars and halberd-like polearms. They could go toe-to-toe with most European infantry. For all of these reasons, the Ottomans were seen as the greatest threat to Christendom from the 15th to the 17th century. They were a formidable foe. Were it not for a few key victories at Lepanto, Vienna, Malta and elsewhere they may have conquered half of Europe.
