FY13 to FY23 Tax Return Data of Salaried Persons: Inflation-Adjusted Wage Growth in 10 Yrs (a) Below ₹10L: -21% (b) ₹10L to ₹50L: -39% (c) Above ₹50L: -46%; Purchasing power hugely down in 10 yrs; Nominal wage growth is flat.
Working Class: The Lost Decade
The Income Tax Return Statistics released by the I.T. Department for FY13 and FY23 reveal what is going on with salaried taxpayers in the last 10 years. Writer and journalist Monika Halan @monikahalan has published eye-opening data in her HT column today.
Definitions:
a. Nominal Wage = Wage Not Adjusted for Inflation
b. Real Wage = Inflation-Adjusted Wage (Real Purchasing Power)
Annual Inflation Rate from FY13 to FY23 (Ministry Data) is as follows:
Using CPI (MOSPI, Base 2024=100): Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 55.6 in March 2013 and 93.3 in March 2023. This means cumulative inflation of 68% over the decade (Inflation: 5.3% per year average).
FY13 to FY23
Income Below ₹10 Lakh PA
Nominal Wage Growth: +2.8%/yr
Inflation-adj Growth: -2.4%/yr
Real Change in 10 yrs: -21.5%
Income ₹10 Lakh to ₹50 Lakh PA
Nominal Wage Growth: +0.3%/yr
Inflation-adj Growth: -4.8%/yr
Real Change in 10 yrs: -38.7%
Income Above ₹50 Lakh P.A.
Nominal Wage Growth: -1.1%/yr
Inflation-adj Growth: -6.0%/yr
Real Change in 10 yrs: -46.4%
It Means: On average, if your annual salary was ₹1 cr in FY13, your nominal (on paper) salary in FY23 is ₹89L, and your real salary (adjusted for inflation @ 5.3% per year) is ₹53.6L.
For a salary earner on average:
High Income:
Purchasing Power is down 47%
Middle Income:
Purchasing Power is down 39%
Low Income:
Purchasing Power is down 21%
The low-income group (below ₹10 lakh p.a.) is the least hit in terms of wage stagnation and wage de-growth.
GDP Growth vs. Wage Growth
Question:
From FY13 to FY23, how the annual nominal GDP growth is around 11%, while annual nominal wage growth is only 2.8% for lower income, 0.3% (flat) for middle income, and -1% (negative) for higher income salaried individuals?
Answer:
a. Demographic Dividend: India adds roughly 1 crore young individuals to the working-age population every year. As these new workers join the formal economy, they add to the nation’s productivity (GDP), receive salaries, and become taxpayers.
b. Nearly all of the GDP growth (related to salaried employees) comes from more taxpayers entering the system rather than existing taxpayers earning substantially more within their income band.
c. Since labour supply is more than demand, the bargaining power of employers increases. As a result, the salaries of existing workers remain flat or negative.
d. So, India’s GDP growth story is a labour supply-driven growth story, and not a labour demand-driven (wage-growth driven) story.
e. Upward Mobility: Some smart or lucky individuals manage to move up the income bands through skill upgrades, job switching, etc. But the vast majority remain stuck within their band, and keep losing the inflation battle.
Gen Z’s Uncertain Future
a. India is not an export-led or manufacturing-led economy. India’s growth story is a domestic consumption growth story. But the massive “demographic dividend” which India enjoyed for so long is now ending. Nothing lasts forever.
b. India urgently needs to move from a labour-supply driven economy to real wage-growth driven economy. Otherwise, once the demographic tailwind ends in a few years, there will be no wage tailwind to replace it.
c. Economists like Dr. Arvind Subramanian @arvindsubraman and Dr. Raghuram Rajan have long said that consumption in India is broken. Now we know that’s because wage growth is broken.

In an unprecedented atrocity and attack on freedom of media in India, the Rafi Marg office of the nation’s oldest news agency, United News of India (UNI), was literally attacked by a police force that would put an anti-terror operation to shame. Employees were not given time to even collect their belongings or hear from management. The management has been left outside, and employees are being beaten inside.

The sealing of the office of United News of India (UNI), one of the country’s oldest and most respected news agencies, has raised serious concerns over press freedom.
📌 Staff members were forcibly evicted, with several not allowed to retrieve their personal belongings.
📌 Female journalists were manhandled by teams of Delhi Police.
📌 Some Delhi Police personnel were intoxicated while on duty.
📌 Two lawyers and Delhi Police personnel abused several individuals.

Earlier, the Indian Army had to deal with enemies now it seems they even have to battle poor infrastructure. What a disgraceful and senseless decision to provide EVs to our defence forces. Are we really so deep in corruption that even the Army has to suffer because of it?
Just imagine in Leh-Ladakh, where it takes nearly an hour to charge just 1% of battery, you’d need around 100 hours for a full charge! We don’t even have proper infrastructure, yet we’re relying on EVs for our soldiers? This is one of the lowest and most ill-informed decisions ever made.
And to make things worse, the vehicles reportedly come with CEAT tyres the same ones used in the Thar known for their poor grip and stability. Speaking as someone deeply experienced in off-roading, I can vouch that CEAT tyres perform terribly on rough terrain.
Giving such vehicles to our Army is nothing short of a disastrous decision.@adgpi

X is deeply concerned by the recent order from the Karnataka court in India, which will allow millions of police officers to issue arbitrary takedown orders through a secretive online portal called the Sahyog. This new regime has no basis in the law, circumvents Section 69A of the IT Act, violates Supreme Court rulings, and infringes Indian citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression.
The Sahyog enables officers to order content removal based solely on allegations of “illegality,” without judicial review or due process for the speakers, and threatens platforms with criminal liability for non-compliance.
X respects and complies with Indian law, but this order fails to address the core constitutional issues in our challenge and is inconsistent with the Bombay High Court's recent ruling that a similar regime was unconstitutional. We respectfully disagree with the view that we have no right to raise these concerns because of our incorporation abroad—X contributes significantly to public discourse in India and the voice of our users is at the heart of our platform. We will appeal this order to defend free expression.

Since many sharpshooters in society were trying to Defame the Lady for her consuming alcohol, dancing and being vocal at Police Station, one would draw your attention to tagged video, which selectively wasn't released by officials who were trying hard to save their erring "Thullas", who acted in a Highhanded manner and brought disrepute to @odisha_police
Just to be clear, those Serving as Police Personnel with Honour are much respected by Citizens, Armed Forces and us Veterans alike but those who act in Highhanded manner with a nonchalant approach and intent to dehumanizing Citizens, or being Corrupt etc, are colloquially referred to as "Thullas" so there is NO need to be sentimental about that age-old adage
What you see in the video is the Lady being Groped, Sexually Assaulted and being Incited
Now, imagine that Lady being your Sister or Wife or Fiancé and then you being with her in a Police Station for filing a FIR Complaint and Police NOT only NOT taking down your Complaint but asking for your Medical Test, dehumanizing you and the Lady, threatening you, stripping you, putting you both in lockup etc etc and all that because the Lady and you demanded Justice, Action to nab Culprits and so on
Some wanted to tell us to look at both sides and so I had to and one doesn't find any reason with some "Thullas" at Bharatpur Police Station of @odisha_police to act in the manner, that it has not only botched up this case but also indulged in character assasination of the Lady and illegal detention of Serving Officer of @adgpi @HQ_IDS_India
Well, @DGPOdisha @CMO_Odisha @GovernorOdisha need to look at this Case afresh and also haul up those in @odisha_police who indulged in Defamation of that Lady and Serving Officer
Do read this to understand Facts and Act swiftly and decisively as patience amongst Citizens and Armed Forces especially Young Officers must be running low
xitter.cf/RDXThinksThat/status/1…
Armed Forces, including @HQ_IDS_India @adgpi @IAF_MCC @indiannavy don't shy away from punishing erring Personnel and Bad Hats and Police Force mustn't be able to wriggle out, as even in this case some good Police Personnel have taken charge of situation, some "Thullas" within are hurting the cause while trying to save those who are squarely responsible to create this mess due to Highhandedness
Armed Forces do NOT live on Mercy of anybody and are trained to defeat threats and enemies and to expect them to entangle themselves in legal battles would be not fully appreciated
Till recently, the Armed Forces did NOT take to Justice System on many occasions and acted swiftly and decisively to resolve such cases on its own and with good lessons for other side; be it some bad hats in Police, some rowdy Politician etc
Now, since Armed Forces seek Justice, it should NOT be misconstrued to be a weakness
Selective videos of an agitated woman can't be an excuse for Highhandedness of "Thullas"
Even through the course of few days, good Policemen have acted responsibly like @arunbothra Ji but some "Thullas", as many would call them, behaving in an uncouth manner, have shamed the Police Force
Of course, if any Law is violated by any Citizen, Police must Act but it doesn't give them any license to be Highhanded
@HQ_IDS_India @adgpi @IAF_MCC @indiannavy will never let criminal soldier go scot free but at the same time civil administration should not take undue liberties with military personnel and certainly don't expect pardon over such gross misconduct and Highhandedness as observed in this instance
Allow a Joint Investigation with involvement of @suryacommand and Intelligence agencies with @CBIHeadquarters and @DGPOdisha with full access to @adgpi and we will get the truth out soon
@HMOIndia and @DefenceMinIndia must take this to logical conclusion and @rashtrapatibhvn could order a SIT with full access to @HQ_IDS_India to monitor the Case
JAI HIND 🇮🇳
(PS - Are you there @republic @IndiaToday @TimesNow @CNNnews18 @ndtv @DDNewslive @airnewsalerts?)
To all those who are playing into hands of "Thullas" by circulating videos of a Lady who was accompanied by a Serving Soldier, let me ask you to watch and think about it and understand why these selective videos have been made public by @odisha_police
Without perusing any Video and assuming what you all state is a fact that Lady was inebriated and vocal, one still doesn't grant a license to @odisha_police to treat her in the manner it did, it doesn't give any right to keep a Serving Soldier in Unlawful Custody, it doesn't give any liberty to @odisha_police to delay FIR & NOT initially follow directions of High Court Judge
In the videos, was the Lady obstructing justice or demanding justice? She was seeking justice as just because she had some alcoholic beverages, she didn't concede the right to file a FIR and certainly didn't deserve either humiliation, or illegal arrest or, this newly ill-directed defamation by selectively releasing her videos
In the videos, is the conduct fit enough a case to Jail the Lady, also knowing well she was with a Serving Soldier at that time?
So, are these videos even a case to pardon erring "Thullas" who violated Law and took illegal custody of Serving Soldier?
Is that selective release of video(s) with an intent to malign the Lady and obfuscate the Case of Highhandedness of "Thullas" when she was aggrieved and trying to seek justice?
Doesn't happen that way when we seek Justice and surely doesn't happen when "Thullas" mess with Armed Forces so blatantly
Think more on what all has gone wrong in this Case, how the "Thullas" have neglected their duty and committed crimes, while some police personnel have also helped with medical help and not allowing additional jail custody
Don't get carried away by videos which might carry angst of a Citizen against erring Police and nonchalant police persons
Don't carry a brief for "Thullas"
There is a difference between Police Personnel and a "Thulla"
There is a difference between "Galati" (Mistake) and "Gustakhi" (Imprudence) and we understand both well and know how to treat both differently
Your public concern about language or conduct of the Lady is either unfounded or malicious and therefore this short response ends here
Let's Summarise Facts
1. Wrongful arrest of serving officer by @odisha_police (Officer was sober)
2. Officials attempted to prevent the medical reports from being reported and changed hospitals to run Misinformation
3. No CCTV footages in Police Station; an offence as per Supreme Court directions
4. Illegal arrest of Lady, her Manhandling and Ill-Treatment including Sexual Harassment
5. Disallowed initially meeting officers from Station Headquarters
6. Inspite of clear directions of the High Court Judge, the case was wilfully prevented to be listed till the Judge warned the concerned official(s) on record
7. Even after Judge granted bail and ordered early release, Police still ensured that it took one more day to release
8. When Lady was released she was to go back to Jail for the last night but pressure from Army and a good officer in Police allowed her being readmitted into another department
"Thullas" should should NOT be allowed to Smirk at Soldiers while, the Armed Forces must make "Thullas" Squirm !
Think about it Bharat !
Koi Shak?
@DGPOdisha @odisha_police
Thank you for the Humanitarian Approach @arunbothra Ji when police jail custody was avoided for last night by your intervention as we are informed
While @rajnathsingh @MohanMOdisha #COAS @adgpi, @suryacommand Chief Justice, Odisha, @GovernorOdisha etc are monitoring the Case, the @odisha_police is still attempting to obfuscate the Facts while Defaming a Lady through selective release of video(s)
